I've read people mentioning tipping with cash to avoid having to scan a credit card or room key...is this even possible with the new 18-20 mandatory tip?

18-20% is not mandatory. They will add 18% if the party is 6 or more, otherwise, you tip what you want.

you will have to tell your server that you will be paying the tip in cash instead of putting it on you kttw card if you have more than 5 people in your group because they automatically have the 18% tip for 6 or more in your party

HOW you pay the tip is your choice. Cash, credit card, room charge...they all work.

Personally, I prefer credit card because I know the right employees will get it. If I were going to pay cash, I would hand it directly to the server. I don't want a busboy pocketing the whole thing.

JimMIA hit the nail on the head. How you tip is up to you, just let your server know what you plan on doing.

To clarify the mandatory tipping confusion for you:

All bills will show what an 18% and what a 20% tip would be - how much you leave is up to you. There are two exceptions to this.

Party size is 6 or more. Does not matter what the ages are in the party, nor does it matter if you are two groups of under 6 who are dining together. 6 bodies at a table = 18% mandatory gratuity for all parties at the table.

You are using the DDE (Disney Dining Experience Card) in this case, no matter what your party size is, your group will have to pay a minimum of 18% gratuity.
