We're trying DDP for the first time next week. DH is diabetic and would need a sugar free dessert. It's not usually a problem for table service, but what about counter service?

Do they all have sf desserts? What if they don't have one? What if you don't care for the one they have?

Any info or experiences would be very helpful!

I've read reports of many people saying they were able to get an extra bottle of water or some fruit as their CS Dessert choice.
Seems like it's not a rule, but an option many places have.
It's not as much fun as a sf souffle or something, but is a more sugar-friendly option.

You mentioned that you didn't have a problem at the TS restaurants - in what ways were they able to accomodate his needs for sugar free desserts? Do all the TS restaurants have a sugar free alternative available?

Regarding CS meals and snacks, I gathered this information earlier here on the board:

Epcot - bakery in Norway has sf mousse
Epcot - Fountainview Cafe has sugar free
MK - Main Street has sf ice cream (and apparently most CS can get it for you)
MK - Cosmic Rays has sf brownies
MGM - Sci Fi has a sugar free shake, apparently, and 50's Prime Time has sf cake (these are both TS, obviously)
MGM - Backlot Express has sf parfait

If anyone has anything to add to this list, it would be MUCH appreciated. I need to avoid sugar as well, but I still want some treats while on vacation!!!

For kids meals they offer SF Jello maybe he can ask for that?

Eating SF Jello would be okay in a pinch, but I think I would plan my CS meals around the places that offer better SF choices such as parfait, cheesecake, mousse, brownie, etc. I can eat SF Jello any old time, but I can't WAIT to have some mousse and cheesecake - yum!

See, that's kind of my problem. Like at MK. If we want a decent dessert we have to eat at Cosmic Ray's. I don't mind it, but I'd prefer Columbia Harbor House or something else. I was just wondering if they'd let him pick up dessert somewhere else or if they have a stash somewhere.

We'll see, I guess. I'll report back when we get home.

Please do. My plans as of now are to choose a dessert which is something easily saved for later, and save it for my kids - I will then use a snack credit elsewhere for the dessert for myself. In a pinch, I'll give my son my sundae or cake or whatever and have his applesauce and nasty jello :scared1:

In the special needs information it says if they don't have sugar free desserts at CS they can call a central location that will send one out (this includes ice cream carts) but it may take 10 -20 minutes. This was pre-sugar free jello though so that may be the default choice now. They aren't super helpful on CS desserts generally though as a nut allergic person there were numerous places with no nut safe dessert (except jello or applesauce).

AllEars.net has a section for Disney w/Diabetes (with tips like you can ask for a sharps container from housekeeping), and they also have an article on low-carb eating at WDW that mentions several sugar free options at different TS and CS locations. And I found a thread on this board from last year on diabetes at WDW, but since I'm new, the board won't allow me to link to it...even though it's THIS BOARD! :rotfl2: To help you try to find it, look under Disney Trip Planning Forums - disABILITIES! and the date was 5/18/2006, post that started the thread was by Star Wars Guy.

Hope that helps :goodvibes

For TS restaurants, should I indicate that we have a diabetic diner and need a SF dessert on the ADR? What about at buffet style restaurants?

I just did a ton of reading on this, and apparently the best thing to do is note it on your ADR's AND call the restaurant 24 to 48 hours ahead of time to let the chef know of your special needs - this is for regular dinners as well as buffets. They will make sure you have a sugar free dessert at your meal. I was planning to cancel the Dining Plan before I discovered that they could do this for us! I'm so glad to know I won't just have to pass on dessert every night.

I had DH take pictures of his desserts, and I'll try to get those posted soon.

Our experience with CS was that we were offered either the Jello or fruit when there was no sf option on the menu. We were offered a fruit cup or chips at Earl of Sandwich. SF Jello was available at the Pop Century food court as was NSA chocolate/vanilla swirl Edy's ice cream.

The brownies (Cosmic Ray's and Electric Umbrella) were quite tasty (very similar to Little Debbie) but heavy on the malitol. I would recommend splitting one or saving half for later.

For our table service meals, I purposefully didn't call ahead. I wanted to see what (if anything) the restaurants could produce on the fly.

The good news is that there was always a sugar free dessert available and everyone I talked to said there would be one available at every traditional table service restaurant (we didn't check on buffet/family style restaurants).

The bad news, if you want to call it that, is that there wasn't much variety. Out of the 4 TS lunches/dinners we had, 3 of the desserts were cheesecake. Near as we can guess they have a "house recipe" for sf cheesecake that they use when needed. At Liberty Tree Tavern it was served warm and unadorned. At 50's Prime Time Cafe it was served cold with berries. At the Concourse Steakhouse it was served cold with berries and some kind of strawberry sauce. All were good, but DH liked LTT best.

The only different dessert we got was a really, really good orange mousse at Le Cellier. DH was very impressed.

DH also had a NSA malt at 50's Primetime Cafe. They only have vanilla NSA ice cream so they can make a vanilla shake or malt.

Again, we got all of these just by requesting at the beginning of the meal. We did not call ahead or make special arrangements.

When we were on the DDP last Sept, I requested a sugar free dessert at the Concourse Steakhouse as there was none listed on the menu. There was no problem, the chef was able to provide me with a sugarfree cheese cake type dessert in about 15 minutes, however the waitress suggested that next time I should let them know at the beginning of dinner. It was a tasty dessert. You just have to ask and they will do the best to accommodate you.
