DDP and my "adult" child

My husband and I are doing WDW in Feb with our two kids. One kid is 6 and the other will be 10 by the time of the trip. So when doing our reservations, he is considered an "adult" for dining purposes on the DDP.

He is picky and I am concerned that he will not enjoy eating off of the adult menus. Has anyone had experience with having a kid this age and the restaurants allowing them to order off of the kid's menu? In my mind, I am paying adult prices so why would WDW bat an eye because the cost of a child's meal is cheaper. They would still be coming out ahead. But I am not sure if this will be possible.

I asked a friend and she said that it may be possible. It might just depend on the place we are eating and the server/manager.

I mean, my kid would rather chicken nuggets or a burner over a steak. Strange, I know. :lmao:

There's no issue whatsoever. Your 10 year old can order whatever he wants off the kids menu or the adult menu. My 15 year old still orders off the kid menu half the time and we always do the DDP.

We are going in Feb too with ds10 and ds12....both very light eaters. DS10 would rather eat "kiddie food" or steak. Our plan is to either have them split an adult entree if they agree or buy a kids meal OOP for ds10.

This will free up credits for an additional ts (maybe 2).

With the exception of O'hana's, we will not be eating at family style/buffets. We don't enjoy buffets anyway.

DS10 also takes medication and he doesn't eat lunch at all. So there may be times where he'll just have a soda! The kid only eats for survival!!!

Even with the free dining, I just can't see ordering a filet mignon for him that will just sit there.....seems like such a waste!

As PP said - it's no problem. I've even heard of picky adults ordering off the kid's menu but getting adult portion sizes. One thing you may want to consider is if you have any 2 TS credits planned, paying OOP for your child to have extra TS credits to use for another meal. It might end up being a better use of credits for a better value.

This is specifically what I was looking for, paying OOP for the kiddo. Good to know we will be able to do that on our upcoming trip!

In 2009 my DD turned 10 during out trip so therefore an "adult". Sometimes she wanted to get the kid's meal instead of a regular entree. First time at Kona I paid OOP for her meal. Saved the TS for something else.

However, while we were eating at 50's PTC I was told by our server that many TS offer "junior" versions of their kid's meals. Yeah! We got one at 50's PTC and then when we returned to Kona a few days later she got the Junior Mickey Raviolis.

Here are the pix of both Mickey Raviolis to give you an idea of the change in portion size.

Hope this helps.

We did this and our kid was picky. However, he ended up enjoying ordering off the menu for adults and it satisfied his bigger appetite. My tips are:
1) Eat at buffets.
2) Research menus and show him/her before you go.
3) Adult food items do not have to be ordered exactly as listed. I change things myself. Example, leave off the sauce, or Can I have that grilled chicken sandwich with American cheese instead of Swiss please, and no lettuce, and tomatos? Oh, and instead of a dijon mustard sauce, will you put a little mayo on it? you get it - just as for us adults, restaurants are happy to do this.

All of these strategies worked great, and my son felt very special ordering off the regular menu and found many things he loved. Really looking at the menus ahead of our trip and visiting those places where I knew there was something he could work with helped. For example, yes I know he likes hamburgers. Well, anyone can order a hamburger. If I order a hamburger off the adult menu, I order to my liking and so can he.

Also, I think it was The Plaza in MK that has alot of sandwiches. Well, I totally did that one, because I knew he could taylor a sandwich to his liking.
