Pre Trip Report

Introduction:
Okay, I’ve been lurking on this site for awhile, but have never tried writing a trip report before, so bear with me. I get a little, well - wordy. :rotfl:

I’ve been a HUGE Disney fan my whole life. My earliest memories are of Disneyland (born in L.A. (the city), then moved LA (the state)). Must have been there over a dozen times. I saw Disney World for the first time in December of 1971 – and believe it or not, at only 2 years old I have a few memories of this! ‘Course, I also remember the move mentioned above & I was only 2 then as well. Seems my memory is crystal clear until a few years ago & now I struggle to remember what I had for lunch! WhooBoy…:sad2:

A little history of the cast:

Me (38) (Disney Fan(atic) For Life) – always a huge fan and an even bigger “Big Kid”
Nickname (given by DD): Dizzy Disney Fanatic (DDF)
DD (19) Disney Enthusiast – finally converted to Fan(atic) after last year’s Senior Trip
Nickname: Sparkly Princess (SP)

Backstory to This Year’s Trip
I have traveled to the Happiest Place on Earth many times over the years, but the trips started to get fewer & farther between once I became a mommy. :laundy:

SP's first trip was when she was but a wee baby of 3 mo old. Needless to say SP has no memory of this. My parents, me & SP were traveling through Florida & only stopped for one day to see Epcot. I have the cutest pic of her sucking on Minnie’s nose in China! I’ll have to try to find that one in the big box of “Will Be Put in A Scrapbook Someday” box.:rolleyes1

After that, my parents treated the two of us to a 3 day trip when SP was 8 years old. She had fun, but at the time was more impressed with the automatic toilets & faucets than anything else! Geesh!:sad2:

Then there were the 2 trips (2000 & 2002) as “family reunions” with my sisters’ family...these are the trips that almost ruined Disney World for SP. :sad1: :scared: Every year around vacation planning time, I'd suggest Disney and she'd say, "Meh. How about..." I despaired I'd never see the mouse again!

But last year – LAST YEAR!!!! – I had the opportunity to take SP with me to Disneyworld for a whole week just the 2 of us! We are best friends & share many of the same tastes, so while there were the usual glitches of any vacation, this was the BEST trip ever!

I wanted to treat her to a grand Senior Trip. Of all the places we looked at (Europe, cruises, cross country road trip...), she finally said, “Mom, I want to go to Disney World with just you. I think it would be fun.” Imagine the Yahooty victory dance I did around the living room! Or, maybe you shouldn’t….it’s a bit embarrassing.

I was worried it might not be as fun as I wanted since I’m now disabled (Lupus & cancer – ick) & had to use a scooter to get around. I worried for naught. We went, we conquered, we had a BLAST!

We didn’t think we’d be going back for at least a couple of years. But – my cancer spread & I have had to go through a bunch of yuck since the last trip. It’s incurable, only treatable now (no worries - it's "arrested" right now, so I try to make the most of my time). SP has been trying to cope with the diagnosis, too, and was feeling a bit down about things. I keep telling her I’m going to keep on living (really living) for as long as possible. I'm not going to take this sitting down! Grrr.

Ok – sorry for the LOOOONG story to get to this point! I was feeling down & SP was playing cards with me one day this past January when out of the blue she said, “You know what I think would make you feel better, Mom? Disney World!” I was surprised. I knew we’d had fun, but I didn’t realize she’d been so converted. :worship: My response? “ALLLL RIGHT!!! When do you want to go?” SP, “How about recreating last year’s trip? Same week, same resort?” ME: Okey Dokey…sounds like a plan

We went the first week of May last year. OOOH! OH, Wow! Oh, the plans to be made! Luckily, I am a first rate plan junkie. I love it. Give me a spreadsheet, a DIS board, and Allears.net, and I’m cranking out the lists & having a ball!

So, this takes us up to the point of planning the trip. Here’s what’s in store:

We’re driving over (I’m restricted from air flight for health reasons) and taking our time. I have to be careful with how I use my energy, so we’ll take 2 days to get there like last year. Slow & easy wins the race as they say.:snail:

Depart:
Thursday, May 1 from Baton Rouge, LA
Stay at the Holiday Inn in Quincy, FL (just outside of Tallahassee) – about a 6-7 hour drive.
Friday, May 2 – Drive the remainder of the way (~4 hours) to Orlando

May 2 – May 9 – Port Orleans Riverside, Mansion Area (We were in room 9055 Oak Manor last year & LOVED it) Hoping for similar this year.

Here’s the day to day plan I have so far. I signed on with TGMike & tried to sync with the best times to attend the different parks. We had almost no worries last year, but I wanted to avoid the one day of overcrowding we had at MK, so I’m hoping this will work out for us.

Arrive Home

We’ve decided against the DDP since SP has the weirdest habit of feeling full from activity.
Meaning:
* Spend a day on the couch watching Gilmore Girls DVDs = Nom! Nom! Tons of Food! popcorn::
* Walking for miles in the parks = poptart in the a.m., small meal at night when DDF insists. Tons of water, though, so at least she’s not dehydrated! :drinking1

Me? I’d eat my way through the parks (especially EPCOT) if I could, but I don’t mind not being tied down to a strict schedule since we’re already slowed down by my health concerns.

I am going to make a couple of ADR’s if I can. One for the night of arrival & one sometime during our stay. SP has been out of town on a photography internship, so we haven’t decided on restaurants yet. I know, I know! I’m a bad DISer leaving it so late! Hopefully we’ll be able to secure at least a couple of TS meals. If not, no biggie.

Next up, ADR's, packing, trying to contain the excitement!!:woohoo: :yay: :dance3:

Okay, so SP is back in town after a month long internship in Washington, DC. She had so much fun & really learned a lot. She even had an offer from a hotel chain to use some of her photos in their hotels!! :cheer2: I'm such a proud mom!

Now she's charged up about hitting the world! We'll be going through the menus & deciding on some ADRs. Neither of us eats red meat & she just LOVES seafood, so we're trying to figure out the best places to eat. Anyone have any suggestions?

I was going through the pictures last night & have a few I'm trying to add to Photobucket so I can post them here. :surfweb: I'll get them up as soon as my *gasp* dial-up connection lets me.

More later....

Here are a few pics from last year's May trip.

Only 24 more days!!
Woo Woo! Okay, so I haven't posted in awhile. It's been kind of crazy at home. I was excited about our Disney trip before, but I'm ecstatic about it now. Lemme explain...

On March 19, horrendous winds & rain blew through our area & uprooted a 200' oak tree in our yard! :sad1: Around 2:30 a.m., I awoke to a booming crash & the sound of broken glass. The electricity was instantly cut off. Oh, no! I just knew it wasn't good. So, I ran outside in the rain to check the damage & saw that the tree had "swallowed" my car and crashed onto the roof of the house right on top of my bedroom, totally blocking the driveway thus we couldn't get out. The electricity line was pulled down by the tree & I could see sparks & arching - so I got back inside PRONTO.:scared1:

After gathering everyone together to tell them to get dressed & ready to exit the house through the back, I called our electric company - & heard their lovely voicemail system.:headache: It took them 7 hours to get out there!!!

Luckily, the transformer completely blew, so the threat of fire & explosion (gas tanks, my Mom's oxygen tanks) was gone. Anyhoo - once dawn lightened the sky, we could better assess the damage. :scared:

My daughter's car was spared by 8"! :worship: My car was damaged, but not completely smushed (about $3500 of damage). The roof was smushed, but not completely sunken in. The tree was HUGE! Lots of damage...lots of cleanup.

Well, long story short, we've been dealing with lost power, gas, water (all back in order within 1 week), insurance adjusters, tree cleanup, rental cars, etc. :sad2:

So, does a trip to Disney World seem like a welcome relief?? Oh, Yeah! 24 more days!! :cool1: :yay: :woohoo:

As for planning, I've called and gotten a couple of ADRs. Hopefully, we won't feel too tied down with these. Also, I've put together my Disney binder with all itineraries, phone numbers, maps, confirmation #s, packing lists, shopping lists, menus, park & show hours & times, etc. etc. It's a lovely piece of planning - I'm so proud of it!

Now all I have to do is wait. And wait. For 24 more days! It's still to early to actually pack. I've done all I can do for now. What do I do to keep busy and my mind off the wait? Why, come to the DISboards, course!:surfweb:

:lovestruc Hi there,
great pics, the one with the two of you in the funny glasses!
The tree thing would have scared  the pants off me!!! Glad to hear nobody was hurt.
Great start to your PTR, Sounds like you will have a blast.
popcorn:: looking forward to hearing more!!! Deb.

Wow! My very 1st poster!

I've been lurking for a long time before trying my hand at the PTR thing & wasn't sure anyone would read this thing. :thanks: for the comments!

::yes:: Yeah, the tree thing really was scary. The contractor is starting today with the new roof. Whew! It'll be less of a worry having it fixed before we head off. Only 21 days to go!:woohoo:

Sooo, I've been trying to keep myself occupied so I don't get too antsy while waiting for our trip. Now that all the planning, checking, rechecking has been done & it's too soon for actually packing (though I have to admit I have made the multiple "for Disney piles" around the room), I have resorted to looking for things around me that remind me of WDW. You know, to get me in the mood for Disney! :rotfl2: 'Cause, you know, I'm not at all excited about this trip or anything. :rolleyes1

I've had a little success: battery operated fans at Wal Mart, ponchos on some kids during last week's rain, etc. But yesterday was the best so far.

I was picking up some stuff at Walgreens & what do I see? HARIBO Happy Cola gummy candy. :yay: Why, you ask, should this remind me of WDW? :confused3 Well.....Last year, SP had her first real taste of EPCOT. She LOVED it!:lovestruc I mean, we had 2 days planned - one for Future World and one for the World Showcase. Well, that just wasn't enough. We ended up going for 3.5 days & she still felt like she didn't get enough EPCOT.

Anyhoo, on our second trip around WS, she decided to pick up some kind of snack/candy from each country. But she's P I C K Y! :sad2: So, it wasn't until Germany (starting at Mexico) that she found anything. Imagine my surprise with all that delicious chocolate in the Germany pavilion, she comes running over with this big, sloppy grin on her face waving a bag of HARIBO Happy Cola gummy candy! "Look, Mom! I just HAVE to get these! Isn't it great? They are so cute! I wonder if they'll really taste like Coke?" She was so excited! I think she finished off that bag by the time we reached Japan. She still talks about how good that candy was. It must have something to do with her complete adoration of all things soda! Club Cool, btw, is her #1 first stop request. :drinking1

So I bought a bag yesterday & surprised her with it last night. Oh my Gosh! She was so excited! "Mom! It's just like Germany in EPCOT!!" I somehow doubt most people associate gummy candy with Germany.:rotfl: But it made her happy, which made me happy. Ah, Disney - still bringing smiles & magic with just the memories.:goodvibes

I know what you mean about the "for disney piles" I have many and I'm still 5 months out!!! :lmao: I hit wal mart every chance I get so they keep growing!:scared1: It's going to be fun trying to pack it all.
I share your daughters adoration for all things soda, infact my family jokes that if I get a cut I'll bleed pepsi....anyway club cool sounds fun I'll have to check that out.
Don't you just love it when you find those little things that lite up your kids(no matter what there age) face!!!
Your so lucky your trip is so close!:cool1: :cheer2: Have fun planning!!! Deb.

:lmao: Same for my DD! Although, her preference is for Coca Cola. When ordering in restaurants, she's always bounced in her seat as she places the order. Still does it. :rotfl:

You definitely should visit Club Cool. You try different Coca Cola company soft drinks from around the world - Africa, Israel, Japan, Germany, etc - Just watch out for the one from Italy, called "Beverly." It's really bitter & nasty! When people came to Italy's offering "Beverly" they invariably screwed their faces up, puckers, squinted, and maybe made some kind of comment like "Oh my GAWD, What is this stuff?!" I tried just a taste on my tongue and was desperate for something to get the taste out! Never again! After seeing my reaction, my soda-loving daughter (after she managed to stop laughing at my expression ) decided she'd never try it.

I put club cool on my must do list, but now I have to try just a little sip of the beverly:sad2:... I just can't help it. I will make sure to have something to wash it down.:thumbsup2 :drinking1
I see you plan to watch the spectromagic parade from frontierland/liberty square, and I was wondering if this is this a prime spot? I would like to find a good spot to watch with my grandchildren.:earsboy: princess: Deb.

Oh, you're braver than I! Kudos to you! I'll never try Beverly again! :scared1:

As for Spectromagic, I've always squeezed in on Main Street to watch the parade, but have heard from other posters on the DIS and from TourGuide Mike that the Liberty Square/Frontierland location is much less crowded. The only issue I could foresee would be if you wanted to go catch Wishes from in front of the castle directly after the parade. I would think you'd have trouble walking against the tide. We saw Wishes from right in the Hub last year & it was marvelous. But now that I've seen it, I can say it would be fantastic from any point of view.:)

I'll be sure to let everyone know how it works out for us.:goodvibes

I don't know if I would call it bravery, :sad2: ...curiosity?...stupidity? ::yes::

Anyway thanks for the tip, we definitely want to catch wishes from the front being our first time. I'll mark frontierland/liberty square for future visits.

:dance3: 19 days:dance3:

oops,:dance3: 18 days :dance3:

I know! :yay: Can you believe it??? Time really does fly.

This weekend I accomplished a bit more in the way of getting ready for the trip:

  • Filled out an order at GardenGrocer.com for snacks/food delivery
  • Made out shopping lists for this weekend (ziplock bags, ponchos, sunscreen, etc.)
  • Cut out LGMHs, laminated, punched holes for hanging on backpack (need to get lime green string/ribbon - on shopping list)
  • Sewed a scooter seat cover out of lime green beach towel - now maybe the towel won't blow off if I have to leave my scooter outside. The towel is a must as most scooter seats are vinyl & everyone knows Florida heat & vinyl just don't mix! I even sewed a pocket onto the back for keeping small items like ponchos, park guides, etc.
  • Updated the packing list spreadsheet in Excel

For months it felt like there was just too much time & now it suddenly feels like there's no time left at all! Maybe it's because they've still not finished fixing my car. They keep saying it'll be this day or that & then calling to say it'll be a few days longer. I'm anxious to get the car back so I can take it to be serviced (oil change, filter change, tune-up, etc.) at least a week before we go. And, I'm tired of filling up that gas guzzling SUV they put me in!:sad2: It gets about 1/2 the mpg as my car.:headache:

And work is keeping me extra busy these days. They've given me so many projects with an April 30 deadline that I'm starting to feel a wee bit nervous about getting it all done in time. :scared: Oh, well, after working 12-14 hour days I'll be just that much more ready for Disney!!:cool1:

:flower: So, I've got 14 days until we leave for Disney World. :cool1: After my shopping trip this weekend I can officially start packing! :flower:

I've picked up the essentials for my germaphobe sensibilities - Lysol Wipes (2 for 1 ($3.79) at Walgreens!), Lysol spray, new pillowcases, and flipflops. I'm not OCD - well, maybe a little :rolleyes1 - but I do have to be very careful! My Lupus & cancer meds reduce my immunity to very low levels, so I have to be extra vigilant about not contracting anything. A simple cold virus could spell an emergency hospital trip for me! So, my germ fighting gear is ready. I will NOT get sick this trip!!:bitelip:

For safety/health sake I always wipe down all surfaces in my hotel rooms (especially door knobs, remote control, telephone), scrub out the sinks & bathtub, use my own pillows & pillowcases, request fresh comforters for the beds, NEVER walk barefoot on the floor - always wear my flip flops in the room, use my own plastic cups & paper towels (Never the glasses they leave for you in the bathroom - after that NightLine story, I'm glad I've always done this! That was :scared1: ), and request that housekeeping refrain from "cleaning" the room while we're there - I only ever ask for fresh towels on occasion since my daughter tends to go through these like crazy. I bring my own towels for my use.

My car still isn't ready. They've put me off for over a week because they're having problems with their painting booths. :headache: Yesterday I filled the rental back up to the 1/2 mark since that's where it was when I got it - $30 for 1/4 tank of gas!:scared: - because I was promised the car today. I got a call 1st thing this morning saying they have to repaint the hood - some problem with the painting again. *Sigh* Now I'll have to feed that monster SUV more gas before this is all over. It's starting to eat into my Disney budget! I'm glad I drive a foreign sedan with good gas mileage. I don't know how people do it with the bigger cars/SUVs/trucks with the gas prices so high!:crazy2: For all of you having to do this on a regular basis - :grouphug:

Well, I've got to get back to work. I'm pulling 12 hour days this week, so Disney World is looking Mighty Fine right now!

My computer crashed on me,:badpc: four days without it  while it was repaired, :surfweb: So glad to have it back!!!

Are the prices at garden grocer fairly reasonable?

Love your idea for a seat cover and the pocket! very creative.:thumbsup2 I hate peeling myself off vinyl seats.

I watched that episode of nightline too and it realy makes you sick to think about it, I will NEVER use glasses in the rooms again!!! I'm not much of a germaphobic at home but when we stay at a hotel I get a bit crazy about it.

Sorry about your car hassle, hope you get it back soon, and good luck getting your projects done by your deadline! pixiedust: some pixie dust for luck.

Happy planning! Deb.

Oh, so sorry about the computer crash! I hate it when the "blue screen of death" has happened to me!:scared1: I'm glad to hear you have it back. to you!

Garden grocer has very reasonable prices. The prices were only slightly higher than what I pay at my local Super Wal Mart, however the sales tax was less!:woohoo: I believe there's a $50 minimum order (not hard to do if you eat breakfast in room & carry bottled water into the parks). The delivery cost is $12. So, all in all, the experience so far has been positive. I'll be sure to update about it on my TR.

Thanks for the compliments on the scooter cover. I'm pretty proud of it myself.

I finally got my car back on Friday. It looks really good - better, even than before, with the new paint & buffing. :car: :thumbsup2

I spent yesterday shopping for all the "Must Haves" for the trip. DD got a new lanyard/badge holder for her KTW in a HighSchool Musical theme. Really cute.:cutie: We stopped by the Disney Store for a little before trip browsing. Turned out they were having a 40% sale on some already marked down items. DD scored a really cute Minnie polo. I got a ::MickeyMo mini plush & she picked a ::MinnieMo . We plan to stage them in photos throughout the world.

Next was a trip to Academy Sports for a new pair of tennis shoes for me. I had a $30 GC that I wanted to use, so I found a good pair of Nikes & only paid $19 for them! :yay:

Finally, we made the Wal Mart stop for snacks, etc. The only item on my looong list that I didn't get was an over-door shoe organizer for the bathroom. At POR, I really think this will come in handy since the sink area has very little room for bathroom supplies. Wal Mart had one, but it was $10.98 & I think I can find a cheaper one at the Dollar Store. So I still have to pick that up this week.

Once home, I managed to drag myself off the couch & pack up 3 tote bags with the snacks & supplies. I was surprised to find last year's Free Refill mugs in the bags (I thought I'd lost 'em), so now we don't have to buy new ones this year.:cheer2: I even put the Capri Sun & mini sodas into the cooler. Only have to add ice. All that's left is to do laundry & pack my personal suitcase! I'm feeling a bit smug with my advance packing! :lmao:

Thanks for the pixie dust :tinker: ! I'll need it to meet all the work deadlines. At least I feel a bit better about being prepared for the trip and that's a real relief.:dogdance:

9 days!!!!!
Yay for single digits!!! I'm so excited for you!
Thanks for the garden grocer tip:teacher: , it should save us quit a bit with 12 people. We're on the dining plan but we plan to do breakfast in the rooms.
Glad you have your car back and in better form!:woohoo:
Good luck with your organizer search, I love to find the best deal too.:thumbsup2
Happy Packing!!! Deb.

Only 8 More Days!

I've got most pre-trip stuff accomplished. Still need to pack up my suitcase after a few loads of :laundy:

DD already has her suitcases packed minus last minute make-up and hair stuff. And just like I taught her in Girl Scouts, each outfit is packed into a ziplock bag and labeled for which day/park she wants to wear them! I'm so proud! Oh, my! Seems I've raised another OCD planner!:rolleyes1

Now it seems we sit around every evening just talking, and talking, and talking....about Disney!:hyper2: We're so excited!

Ooh, I also have to get my car serviced. Must not forget the :car: !

Sounds like you raised one smart cookie! :thumbsup2 You have a right to be proud. My DH looked at me as if I had lost my marbles when I came home with a **load of ziplock bags and told him they were for our trip! :confused3 I'm sure he will get it by the end of the trip.
Did you ever find an over-door organizer? I really want one for our trip.
Anyway sounds like your moving along nicely, have fun planning. Deb.
