DDA Chapter 5

Glynis hopefully tonight all will be better :wizard:

So, Alan and I are on the outs today! He called me on his way home from work last night to tell me that he was coming home. No problem, he does this every day, since he has a 45 minute commute, it let's me know when to have dinner ready for him. Just before he hangs up he says, "Oh, by the way, I'm only going to be home for a few minutes to freshen up. I'm working on my freelance project tonight." Well, this was the first I'd heard of it! I told him that I don't mind him working with a client, but I'd like a bit of a head's up. Just to be included. I told him that I'm beginning to feel like he's cutting me out of that portion of his life. Not to mention the fact that he promised Jacob that they would start his Pinewood Derby car last night. Talk about one disappointed 8 year old! Alan couldn't figure out why I was so angry. Hopefully, we'll both cool off today and talk it through when he gets home tonight.

I posted this on the family and community boards to see if folks have done this and how and if they got tickets

Our dancing/singing group is having a raffle at a talent competition and we thought it would be great to raffle off a big item like Disney tickets. We have no clue how to go about asking for donated tickets. Anyone done this? Who did you ask? Did they send you tickets?

I got this reply from one guy.

just to give you a major HEADS UP-

i hit the link in you signature and saw that your dd attends vcs (it was still vca when my kids attended). based on this i'm assuming you live in solano county.

please be aware that there are very specific laws in california (all counties), with the u.s. postal service and specificly in solano regarding raffles and related activities. these fall under 'gaming' laws and since gambling is illegal to a great extent in california you have to take great care to ensure you are not violating any laws in organizing or conducting these fund raisers.

solano county in particular is very active in shutting down and prosecuting (fines) groups or individuals who do not follow the letter of the law. they go after big companies and organizations (old navy lost when they were charged because they had a promotion with raffle tickets you received with a purchase-and since the law forbids selling raffle tickets it was deemed illegal-but individual groups and organizations have been shut down and held accountable as well).

the u.s. post office also has some very intricate rules about doing raffle ticket and similar fiund raising solicitations and purchases through u.s. mail-and they can impose major fines (as well as refer for prosecution).

the other thing when you research this is to look to the laws that govern your/your group's status. there are different rules for churches, non profit organization (and you have to have actual non profit standing with all the appropriate paperwork filed and approved), for profit buisnesses/organizations, and private individuals. don't rely on what someone tells you word of mouth who did a raffle or fundraiser themselves in solano county/california-you may be subject to very different laws.

sorry if this has gotten too wordy-but i want you to be aware of potential issues. i served on the board of directors for a non profit group (performing arts) in solano and we had to abandon or realy change our fund raising activities. we ended up having to send a couple of our board members to a workshop that dealt entirely with the laws to learn the appropriate and non violating manner to do raffles and such-and when we went to do 2 particular ones (a cruise giveaway and some very generous donations that we wanted to raffle) we had to take great care to ensure that the wording on the tickets, the website and any mailed advertisements/solicitations was done in a manner in strict accordance with the law (ultimatly we could'nt 'sell' the tickets-we had to do a convoluted process that involved soliciting donations to a non profit with a 'thank you gift' of the raffle tickets, the big ticket items we had to do in the more complicated process of organizing an event where people were gifted tickets if they purchased admission tickets to an event and then all the tickets were drawn at the event as part of the 'entertainment').

I just wanted info on donation tickets. Ellie's ballet group has done this and it came out fine (couldn't get info from the lady who wrote the letter, I guess she didn't want to share the "wealth" of info).

now I don't know if he is talking about the disney tickets or the cruise.

Maybe I should change the wording.

Please let me know what you think and if I should change the wording.
We thought this would bring in the rest of the money we needed, but now with Mr Happy and is info I wonder if I should change things a bit.

(by the way... I made the "disign" myself in PSE4) :thumbsup2 Does this make me a "DISigner"? :lmao:

Paula - I don't know what to tell you, but I do think the DISign looks great. I would try to consult an attorney or someone who would know for certain what the laws are. "Mr. Happy" took a lot of time to reply to your so maybe there is some merit to his warnings.

I hope she's better today!

Lots of sports tonight, so I'd better get to working. The a/c won't be fixed until tomorrow or Monday, and it's supposed to be 85 today. Luckily, it's the a/c in my area and Merrie's, but Merrie is in Memphis today so I'll put a fan by my desk and possibly move to another area that has a/c if it gets unbearable.

I hope all the sick kids, including Sophie and Nicholas are better!

Have a good day everyone! :)
Hope the no A/C wasn't unbearable! Have fun with all the sports tonight.
She is doing so much better, thanks!!! No fever & she is going to school.
Good to hear!!
Oh No that could be bad timing for potty training. Hopefully she will realize that if the burning comes back it is just as bad with a pull up as when she is on the potty. Of course I pray that it doesn't come back :wizard:

Colby is doing very well too. He has only had one wet morning in the last 2 weeks  Maybe I won't have to drag pull ups to WDW this trip :cool1:
:cool1: :cool1: Colby! Keep it up! I relish the thought of not buying pull ups again! $50/month of fun money now!!!

Sorry you had such a rough night. to you & Molly, hope she is feeling better today!

Hope she's over it now! :wizard:

Robyn - hope Molly is doing better today!
Morning, everyone!

Robyn - How's Molly doing this morning? Everything ok in the pottydepartment?
It seems as if she is fine. Thanks everyone for the good thoughts!!
I was thinking that I'm in pretty good shape to work on the dry wall today, but that was last night. Now that I have a fresh eye on the situation I realized that I still have a lot of things to box up and get out of the rooms before I create more messes for myself. That is what I will work on this morning. I do have some dust masks and they help some, but not with the skin irritation. I had itchy dry skin :scared: At this point I just want to get it over with. Hopefully after tomorrow the dust issues will be cleaned up. Of course that means getting my butt in gear now :rotfl:
Good luck with everything!! It sounds like you are making good progress.
My sister says it's tiring. She didn't have any leave time from her job and worked the entire timeshe went through her partial mastectomy and treatments. I don't know how she did it.
Sally, I meant to say that I loved your photos from the Star Wars show. They were fantastic!!
I am going to go see her next weekend. DS and I will fly up there Friday morning and come home Sunday.
It's good that you can go and see her. 's

Glynis - I hope you and Alan get back in each other's good graces tonight.

Theresa - Your volunteer, Suzann, sounds like a lot of fun!
Ditto
Thanks Lindsay! Gary told me just a couple more days lol He is finishing the trim now, then we will start on the floor.
Can't wait to see pics!

Well we bought some new temporary flooring for the bathroom. It is the stick & peel squares. It was only 28 cents a square, so this will work till we do the total remodel :thumbsup2

Where did you get it? That might be an idea for my mom's kitchen until such time as she can do the stuff she really wants to do.

Menard's, they are 28 cents a square or a box of 45 for $12.60. The squares are 12 x 12 I think.

Thanks, Glynis! I will mention the grape juice to her!
The thought of purple grape juice makes me queasy - it was one of the things I couldn't keep down when I was pregnant. :scared:

I hope you get things sorted out with Alan! It's no fun to be in a fight. I hope he makes time to help Jacob with the derby car soon. It is a really time consuming project! DH lined the bottom of the cars he made with DS with flattened lead fishing weights to make it heavier. They could weigh 1 lb., but not more than that. DH said the car will go faster if it is heavy. :confused3

Oh, I'm sure that we'll work through this! We always do! He just gets so busy and single-minded sometimes. I know that he's looking forward to making the car with Jacob. Alan still has his cars from his pinewood derby days. He's been looking forward to the time that Jacob was old enough to be in Scouts so he could do it! Before he left last night, he did spend some time with Jacob and a piece of paper, letting Jacob design what he wanted it to look like.

I need to get moving, my house looks a mess! Funny how fixing up one room can make the rest of the house look horrible lol

Good afternoon, DDA! Not too much going on around here today. Terra spent the morning mothering Tutter along with Erin and Kaylin. If Erin fed or changed Kaylin, Terra did the same. I guess we're headed to the mall soon to get a piece of Disney scrapbook paper to decorate a box and then walk a little until Phil gets off of work.

Tonight I get to start helping Rachel's friend's mom plan their Disney trip. Apparently she asked my mom how much I would charge her to help them out. I have no idea how to answer that question, but I know she'll insist as she did when I hemmed some pants for her. It should be fun though as I think it's their first trip! Oh yeah, and we're going to a play at Rachel's school. She's only been doing publicity, but it's her first time being involved in something like this and she's really excited for us to see it. It's called 50 Reasons Not to be in a Play and is apparently really funny.

Well, Mother Terra and Baby Tutter are apparently ready to go so I'd better run. Catch you all soon!

I so hate not having my "enter" key work:mad: It is so hard to function with out it!

Until his laptop finally died completely, my dad's space bar didn't work. We had to copy and paste the "space" after every word, etc. It drove me bonkers to use it even for a few minutes. And this wasn't short term...it went on for well over a year as he didn't want to start taking his new computer in the van with him until he had to in order to save the extra bouncing around.

I just wanted info on donation tickets. Ellie's ballet group has done this and it came out fine (couldn't get info from the lady who wrote the letter, I guess she didn't want to share the "wealth" of info).

I'm sure that is was more info than you wanted but he was very polite and sounds like he really was just trying to be helpful so that you didn't run into trouble.

I thought so too, Vicki.

Off to work. Have good afternoons everyone! :goodvibes

It smells very good! Do I need to add more water or will the juices make enough for the gravy?

Hope you like it! I wish I had it cooking here at my house. I love the smell of it while it's in the crockpot!

Paula - Sorry, I don't know. But I will tell you one year at Nanny Conference we were not allowed to hold raffles, and it MIGHT have been the year we were in San Diego. The hotel got on us abut it and said we were ONLY allowed to award DOOR PRIZES, we could not hold a RAFFLE. It has been quite a few years ago so I can't recall how we did it - I think we bought tickets and then dropped them in a box according to the item we hoped to win. That year it was a no-no.
I also know the year I ran the auction at DS's preschool the church decided we weren't allowed to have "gambling". We had a "Chance Room" with items valued under $50. For $1 per ticket you bought "chances" and dropped your ticket in the box for the item - same principle as the one at the conference. In past years the chance room made several thousand dollars, and the year they changed the rules we lost TONS of money even though we had more items than ever before.:sad2: We ended up having people write down how much they would be willing to pay and drop the tickets in. We randomly drew tickets and then the winner had to buy the item for the amount they listed. Only the winners had to pay so there was no "gamble" involved.
