DD5 wants to be Mary Poppins. HELP!

AS the title says, my DD5 wants to be Mary Poppins for Halloween. The fancy white/red Jolly Holiday outfit. I can't find one ready-made exceot for one on ebay that's $300!!! Anyone ever done this costume, or have a dress pattern # that will work?

or any other places that have communion/flower girl dresses. If you can find a nice white poofy one you can dress it up with the red accents and white hat. Too bad she didn't say something around Easter.. would have been easy to find a hat then.

I was going to suggest that. If you don't mind spending $30 or so on a cheap white flower girl/communion dress (I recall seeing a bunch, some for under $20, at Macy's the other day) I would just do that and then dress it up a little. Maybe take some sheer white fabric and sew on sleeves and pin red bows on the skirt and tie one ribbon as a sash around her waist. It shouldn't be too hard to find a plain white hat, try Michael's or another craft/fabric store.

Does she want to be Fancy Mary Poppins (white dress?) or Mary with the black hat and carpet bag?

I made a Mary Poppins costume ie:black hat with flower, red coat, that she flys into town in.

Took a cheap red Halloween devil cape, cut the ends of sleeves and bottom, hemmed them, added buttons down the front on one side to make the coat. The rest of the stuff I got from goodwill or had- a ruffled white shirt underneath, long black skirt, black ankle boots, glued some fake flowers on a black felt hat, white gloves (which were actually white stretchy mittens).

I actually did make a carpet bag to carry along with an umbrella. For the bag I just bought maybe 1/2 yrd. of brocade fabric at Walmart , folded in half, and sewn up the sides. Added a purse handle- done.

It was fabulous, everyone loved it, and it probably cost me about $25.

Just an idea if you want to go that way.
