DD has too small a mouth for a normal number of teeth. I had this same problem. I had 4 baby teeth pulled, 4 permanent teeth pulled, 3 wisdom teeth pulled, and braces for 3 1/2 years. DD10 is following in my footsteps. She's already had 4 baby teeth pulled, and a week from Monday has to have 2 more pulled. The dentist showed me the xray. Her eye-teeth (?) are growing into the permanent teeth already in. Dentist said that if they continue growing like that they will damage the permanent ones. He's hoping that by pulling the baby teeth it will create a good avenue for the permanent ones to grow into. I didn't ask what will have to be done if it doesn't work. Anyone know what the alternatives might be if this doesn't work?

DD is not happy about this.

Have you gone to an orthodontist? My 11yo DD also has a small mouth and I'm worrried about her teeth, she has one right now still in her gums but completely in the wrong place. The ortho had the dentist take the panoramic type xrays and will look at them in a couple of weeks to tell us what the treatment will be. I wouldn't be suprised if they pull some.

My 10 yo dd just had permanent retainers placed in her mouth to "hold" spots open so the teeth can come in. She also has a small mouth (dentists' words, not mine) and it takes so long for her permanent teeth to come in :confused3 . She is scared her teeth will shift before the adult ones make their way through the gum. So far since Aug, she has had to get reading glasses, retainers and 4 warts frozen off of her leg. You would think that this would make her nerdy, but she now has a beautiful smile, looks 2 years older with her glasses and now wants to shave her legs  . I hate having girls, my boys are so low maintenance. :teeth:

Have you seen an ORTHODONTIST???

My daughter also has a small palate; at age EIGHT her pediatric dentist wanted to pull four baby teeth to make room for her other teeth. I wasn't going to put her through that without another opinion.

I took her to my dentist for a referral to an orthodontist, who I LOVE. He did pre-orthodontia on her, a palate expander, that SAVED her from having teeth pulled. That was over four years ago, long story short, she has been in braces a little under a year, and will be OUT of them next year sometime. I would NOT have teeth pulled without the supervision of an orthodontist. There needs to be a long-term treatment plan in place; what happens AFTER the teeth are pulled if they don't come in correctly?

I hope all works out for your daughter.

I have asked the dentist if we need to see an orthodontist, but he says no. Her palate is perfectly formed, just very small. The thought has crossed my mind to just take her.

Take her, the initial consult should be free, I'd go to more than one to see where you'd be comfortable and they usually have different opinions too.

My Orthodondist did want the panoramic x-rays to help with what to do with my younger DD, the insurance will pay for them to be done at the dentist office every 5 years or something like and it won't count on my ortho max $$ so if you can get those from the dentist it would help. I know from earlier appointments they want to see how her teeth are setting above the gum line and that they've talked about there just not being enough room for her permanent teeth. So far we haven't paid anything, only when treatment starts do we have any payments.

My DD's teeth looked great until her permanent teeth started coming in. Her eye teeth especially are misplaced, I'm sure it is only going to get worse so wouldn't be suprised if they are going to start treament soon. They've mentioned pulling teeth but that is as a last resort. They have my older DD wearing head gear to try to correct her severe overbite without pulling teeth.

My DD13 is already in braces that I will finish paying off in 5 months. But I really like her ortho. Guess I'll call him tomorrow for a consult.

We are in almost the same boat.

DD has "too many cars and not enough parking spaces" as her orthodontist put it.

She has had work done to try and help her teeth squeeze in right since she was 7, getting teeth pulled and a spacer/retainer put in. She is 10 now and sees her orthodonist every month.

In two weeks she goes in for a consult with the oral surgeon to have four permanent and four primary teeth pulled, in addition to the 7 she has already had pulled (plus those she has lost naturally -- how are there any left??)

She is an old pro with the dentist pulling her teeth now, but going to the oral surgeon and getting put to sleep to have eight removed at one time has her very nervous.

Definitely get a second opinion with an orthodontist, but knwo that sometimes even the orthodontist's only choice is to start pulling out teeth to make room.

I had the same as you, too : Four permanent and something like 8 primary removed before braces and then the oral surgeon got the wisdom teeth out before eruption. I'd rather do it again myself than have DD have to go through it.

:grouphug: Hugs to you and your DD!

We have a ortho consultation on Nov 15. Can't wait to hear what he has to say. I just hope I don't have to do two ortho payments at the same time! :earseek:

My dd 11 had 4 teeth pulled too small mouth which is part of her birth defect called pierre robin, She has room in her mouth now for the other teeth , She also has 4 teeth that will never come in but you will never be able to tell. She is getting braces next week. Good Luck!!
