We made a June ressie for our daughter and her family using our points. So tonight she calls and says they are 'thinking about cancelling' (GRRRR). We have ressies for May so we really don't want to go again in June. Our use year is August. I've read several threads about cancelling and banking, etc but it's very confusing. Could someone please please help me understand our options??? Ideally we would like to just bank those points to use next year; is that an option? TIA

If you're use year month is August, the Rule of Four suggests your banking deadline is March 31. My understanding is you could cancel the res. and bank the points until that date. I'd call Member services tomorrow to confirm what options are available.

And not to be a hard #@$ but I would put this in the category of no new reservations without a cash exchange. Your mileage may vary but some people don't seem to value the gift of DVC as actual monetary cost.

As long as you cancel by the end of March, you will be able to bank any of the 2010 UY points used for that reservation.

If you borrowed any points (ie: 2011 UY points), those will remain in the current UY and would have to be used up by July 31st, 2011.

If you wait and cancel less than 31 days prior to the reservation, those points would become holding points and would have to be used up by July 31st as well.

I would just tell DD that she needs to make a decision within the next few weeks, as once you pass that March 31st deadline, you will be stuck.

The short answer is that if the June reservation is cancelled before the end of March, you will be able to bank those points into the following use year without any problems.

After March 31, you will no longer be able to bank points into the following use year with one exception. There is a provision in the offering documents for each DVC resort that says member services may allow you to bank points after the 8-month banking period has expired, but that is a one-time discretionary determination by member services that they are not required to give you so I wouldn't count on it.

If the reservation is cancelled after March 31 but more than 30 days before the scheduled check-in, the points are returned to your 2010 use year and can be used for all permissible purposes but will expire on July 31, 2011. If the reservation is cancelled after March 31 and less than 30 days before the scheduled check-in, the points become "Holding" points that may only be used to make reservations 60 days out from any given date (I believe Holding points also may not be exchanged into RCI or used for Disney collection or ABD - if this is wrong I hope someone else will correct me). These points will also expire on July 31. In this circumstance, if you don't want to use the points for yourself, your best bet would be to try and offer them for rent or transfer on the rent/trade boards here.

Good luck.

Tell daughter and family that the next reservation they need to pay for and give them the WDW telephone number 407-WDISNEY.

It really hinges on what the use year of the points for that reservation is. If they were borrowed 2011, you might be able to switch them with your May reservation and bank any 2010 points remaining. But a decision really needs made by March 31.

It's hard to get mad at family, especially your children, but it is difficult to convey the complexity and challenges of using a DVC membership. Luckily, as noted in other posts, you have time to bank the points into the 2011 UY. THat should allow you to do something BIG or at least use fewer of your 2011 points, which then can be banked to 2012! We like to take friends and family, but it is frustrating that they don't have a sense of the importance of advanced planning and the challenges of canceling and trying to figure out what to do with the points. We want to take my brother's family, but they have difficulty planning something next week, let alone next year. This will drive me crazy! I am not sure one can be a DVC member if they are not able to do some advanced planing, specially during the more popular times of the year.

Go easy on them!!!

OP,
I hope that the points for your DD's trip were not banked or borrowed. If some were banked or borrowed, check with MS to see if those points can perhaps be reallocated to your own May reservation.
While I would be upset about my child canceling, I would find it difficult to refuse to allow her to use my points again. Life happens and DVC is more complex than even some owners realize. Blood is thicker than points. I hope that all works out.

Yep other than cancelling for an emergency or health reasons.

My cousin stuck me for a ressie the week of - I will *never* book a ressie on my points for someone else again.

I wouldn't get upset with your daughter.

I think they are probably just doing what a lot of people do with vacations -- make initial plans, and then when they start actually researching, they find the cost is going to be WAY more than they expected or are prepared to spend.

This kind of thing happens frequently with Disney vacations, particularly if the family doesn't go to WDW regularly. When they start adding up airfare, park ticket costs , food costs, etc, even with free lodging it starts to look like a very expensive vacation.

And, she's giving you FOUR MONTHS notice...which is plenty. This is certainly NOT one of those terrible situations where some inlaw/outlaw cancels at the last minute.

However, I would let her know that you must have a final decision by mid-March if those points are bankable.

We've taken family several times and never had this happen. But if it did that would be the last time I offered to take that person.
