DD or DS invite a friend? How much did you pay for them?

I agree with MrsPete, also. Although, I don't know if we'll be inviting any friends again any time soon. Last March, we asked my DD's, best friend, who I also had taught in KN, to go to WDW with us. Well, before we knew it, her family had invited themselves to go with us:eek: ! It was the worst time I've ever had in my "special place". You know how sometimes you see kids just being little monsters, and you walk by quickly, thanking God that you have the children you have and giving them a hug. OK, WE were the people that others were avoiding:earseek: ! I woulda crawled under a rock if I could have. Anyway, all we wanted was DD's dear, sweet friend and we got the crew:mad: . I don't think we'll ever be able to take her and have the special time we had planned.

I do have to say that it depends on the circumstances.

For instance, if my kid and their friend cook up the scheme and then present it to us (friend included) that is a little different than me deciding that my kid could use a companion their age and that the friend would be doing me the favor. If it were my idea, I'd expect to pay all expenses except pocket change (although akasleepingbeauty has a point - you need the parents to understand that you are paying for the trip in exchange for a companion for your child. You don't want to be stuck with the tab for a non-existant companion.) If it were the kids idea (and I went along with it), I might ask "friend" to discuss with his parents and decide what kind of contribution they could make before I made any decisions - or call his parents and talk to them about it. And if the parents dream it up and ask if we "wouldn't mind" bring their child - I wouldn't hesitate to have them pay all costs (assuming I went along with the idea at all.)

We took my mother in law to WDW this year and paid all expenses for her, except her pocket money. Originally, her husband was to come along as well, but he couldn't. We then decided to invite her sister. And paid all expenses. In this case, it was definately a case of my husband's Aunt doing us a HUGE favor in joining us - as my MIL would have gone crazy trying to keep up with my family of preschoolers, or I would have gone nuts catering my trip to her needs.

per Crissy "For instance, if my kid and their friend cook up the scheme and then present it to us (friend included) that is a little different

In my case, that is exactly what happened - we can only do "big" trips e/o year at most (otherwise, it's good ol'camping and road trips!) but when my kids - 13 & 15 - (& friends) begged me to take them someplace warm in Feb. (and insisted that all I would have to do is get them there and relax), I spoke to their parents FIRST and watched for good deals. This gave all of the kids time to earn some $ of their own towards the trip. Even my kids are paying for their own excursions and extras.
Mom is happy to take them, but the Bank of Mom has a spending cap! I'm just happy that they still all like going away w/me!

crisi....we had the same experience as you.....my 17 year old son and his friend discussed the idea of friend coming along with us. My son asked if it would be alright if Kyle came along. I said I would have to think about it and that I could not afford to pay his way (we are a family of five as it is). Kyle had offered to pay his way and really wanted to come with us since he had heard how much fun we always have onboard. I told him the price of what a 3/4 person would cost and he agreed. He was working and had his own money and his parents were fine with him going with us. The more I thought about it the more I knew it would be a good thing for my son to have him along. I offered to pay his airfare (I know how hard it is to earn money) and he was thrilled!!!

I paid for his pre hotel stay, all meals off the ship and even park admission when we went to WDW for the day after the trip. All in all it worked out fine and he had the time of his life. Said it was his best vacation ever!!!!
