DD moving from MN to Abilene, TX Today

Sad day here. Son in law is transferred to Dyess AFB Jan 1st.

DD and her family are on their way headed down I35 thru MN, IA,MO, OK, to Abilene. Hope to be in Okalhoma City by nightfall. With two cars, a trailer, and two dogs, we'll see, LOL.

Any Dissers here from Abilene area? . I'll be down to visit next month.

They've rented a house about a mile from Dyess in a nice (hopefully) subdivision.

What can anyone tell me about Abilene?

Having once lived in Minnesota, I do find winter a perfect time to move south!

My daughter lived in Abilene for a year while attending college there. She loves the town, but hated the school so has moved back home to finish at a much cheaper state school.

Abilene has a small town feel but there is a little bit of everything you'll find in a bigger city such as shopping, dining, clubs, etc.

What large employers are there besides the AFB?

I would say that the largest employers would most likely be education and health care. There are three universities in Abilene along with three high schools and Abilene State School, which is a MHMR facility. I believe there are two hospitals along with an oncology clinic.
