DD (12) is T1 & for the past two months she has thrown up at least 1 day per week. She normally will get sick a couple times, fall asleep, & the next day feel fine. After she throws up her BG# is 400+, but doesn't have keytones. She's been hospitalized for dehydration & another time spent time hooked up to an IV in the peds office. She's scheduled to see a GI soon. I'm just really worried. Just curious if anyone else has gone through this? Are we missing something? :confused3

Does your DD have any known health problems?
I don't have any suggestions/advice, except to send pixiedust and hope that the GI doctor can find something to help you.
My youngest DD feels sick almost every Saturday. Sometimes, she does throw up. I think hers is related to medication she is on and during the weekend her schedule is different, which may make her ill.

My DD has cyclic vomiting. She gets pale, sometimes confused, and eventually vomits--once or several times over an hour or two. She can be very drowsy during these episodes. It can resolve quickly, or she can feel bad for several hours after.

Cyclic vomiting typically follows a recurring pattern, happening every X number of days. DD's came more in streaks, such as every day for a week at the exact same time of day, then not again for awhile. Fortunately she only has these episodes a few times a year now, usually when she is overly fatigued, and sometimes she only feels sick but doesn’t actually vomit.

I don't think there's general agreement about the cause of cyclic vomiting, though some think it is a form of migraine (DD’s don’t include headaches, btw). DD's are believed to be part of her mitochondrial disease, though one doesn't have to have mito to have cyclic vomiting.

I should probably mention, to be thorough, that DD has episodes akin to low blood sugar as part of her mito (her readings actually look ok, but because her body can't metabolize efficiently, she is low on available fuel at a "normal" reading); we don’t know if going too long without eating contributes to her CV episodes, but I will say she has had very few since starting on small frequent meals and raw constarch, in addition to her mito supplements (carnitine and CoQ10).

All of this may not relate at all to your DD’s situation, but if it rings a bell, do a search on Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome or try looking at cvsaonline.org.

Good luck in finding an answer. We spent years puzzling over of our DD's quirky symptoms, including the CVS, before we found the right doctor who finally put the pieces together and diagnosed her with mito and CVS.

Juliah- This sounds just like what we are going through. We've been trying to find triggers w/ no luck. The only thing we've noticed is it seems to happen after a busy weekend or a large meal. Ped thinks DD is now getting anxious (that she will throw up) when she feels sick & is releasing adrinaline which is then causing her to get really sick. The last 3xs they had to give her something to stop the vomitting. FYI-Ped also mentioned that some girls have it happen every 28-30 days right before their menstrual cycle. Ours is too fruquent for that. Thanks so much to everyone for your help.

Is there any pattern to her position before she vomits? If she is often reclining it could be acid reflux.

Another thought based on the paragraph above is have they ruled out seizures? Because she is confused then vomits and then is very drowsy makes me think that's what is happening. I would check that out. Nausea can happen after a seizure and it sounds like she may be having partial complex seizures.

Cindy,

They ruled out seizures after many EEGs and decided it looked more like a migraine variant. She also has autonomic nervous system dysfunction, which gives her some strange symptoms (like her hands turning purple after eating), so it's really quite confusing to figure out what is what with her. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

My ds now 8, Threw up everyday from about 6 months old until 1 yr, i took him to a GI dr and he had heliobacter Pylori. He took Two round of a combination of antiboctics and no more throwing up. I Was surprised because i had never heard of this.
I hope you find out something from The GI Dr. pixiedust:
