DD broke her arm

My DD broke her arm in tae kwa do this weekend. She is 10 and in a cast from her fingers to just below her elbow. The Doctor said NO swimming! We are booked at VWL for a week & then doing the 4 night DCL. Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your daughter, I hope she's not in too much pain.

As for the Disney holiday, it shouldn't really change your plans too much, other than avoiding the pool. As th cast doesn't go over her elbow, it shouldn't stop her bending her arm, or prevent her from holding on to the hand rails. Depending on how she's doing and what your doctor suggests, she may want to avoid some of the rougher or bumpier rides (rollercoasters, Dinosaur, the Safari etc) to prevent the risk of agrivating the break; the last thing you want is to have to get her arm reset on holiday. Also, a poncho might be a good idea to stop her cast getting wet in the rain.

If her pain gets too bad and she needs a lie down, you can go to any of the first aid rooms and use the beds there for a bit. Other than that, I can't really think of anything else to suggest. Take it easy, go with the flow and have a wonderful time!

i'm so sorry that happened. why oh why didn't the doctor put on a waterproof cast??? i don't know what kind of break she had or if there was a specific reason why she couldn't have that type. did you go to an ortho place, or was it just your regular doctor's office? i don't know what your financial situation is, but if you can swing the cost, maybe you should check into getting it recasted into one that can go into water. those do exist--we've had them. it's just that you're paying SO MUCH for your vacation, a few hundred more so she can swim might be worth it.

of course, if it's not possible to change the cast, she will still have an awesome time!!!! we've taken lots of trip where we didn't bother to swim because you can do that anywhere--we stuck to disney only things....

She actually is my stepdaughter and lives with her Mom in AK. She broke her thumb on her growth plate. Her mother insisted on a cast GRRR. My daughter does not know about the cruise as it was her Christmas suprise. I'm going to be the better person and say that she was concerned that she may injure it further. DH is calling the ortho clinic today in Alaska to speak with the doctor. Swimming is one of favorite things to do. She has never been in the ocean or been on a beach. Thats why we decided to book the cruise. We really can't cancel because my DH and I have orders to Germany for 3 years. GRRRRRR! Calgon take me away!

I also wanted to add that she gets the cats off 3 days after she arrives home...which leads me to believe that it wasn't a bad break. The cast would be on just about 3 weeks.

Good luck getting a waterproof cast for her. If she does manage to get one, she'll love all the waterparks, as well as the regular pools. Even if she doesn't get a waterproof cast, she can still paddle in the sea on the cruise, just make sure she doesn't go too deep.

If it's not too bad a break, she shouldn't really have any problems with the rides. Just think carefully about coasters like Spash and Thunder Mountain, and the rougher 'non-coasters' like Dinosaur and Safari, as these may put too much stran on her injured arm. Some of these, at least, she should be OK on, especially if she is held tight between you and your husband!

Have a magical trip, whatever type of cast she has on!

In addition, you might want to talk to the person who will be removing the cast. Have a line drawn on the cast where it will be cut for removal. Then bring along some "Sharpies" and have the characters autograph the cast, asking them to make sure their signature does not diectly cross the line.

Once the cast is removed and fully dried out, she will then have a very unusual souvenier of the trip.

i wanted to add that the CMs will not prevent you/her from riding anything with a cast. The warnings are out there and it's up to you to decide if it is safe or not. If you have any questions, you can ask the CM at the entrance to the line.
The rides with warnings are marked with a red triangle icon on the park maps and also on signs outside the attractions and before boarding.

Even if they can't change the cast, there are waterproof cast covers available that would allow her to swim. I had one 25 years ago that worked great when I had the same type cast all summer. Make sure you do NOT let her scratch! If she starts to get itchy, it helps to run a COOL blowdryer (or fan...the little personal fans they sell at WDW for about $5 work great) down it. NEVER put anything down the cast. Believe me. Don't do it. Also, if her arm starts to swell in the heat of the Caribbean, try to get her to a cool spot and put a baggie of ice on the cast. That really helps. Can you tell I've done this more times than I can remember???

And...enjoy your time in Schweinfurt!!! Make sure you take time to see the country (countries...everything is just a hop, skip, & jump!) My family was stationed in Pirmasens for 3 years, then back to Heidelberg for 7 years. LOVED it, especially at Christmas time! Make sure you definitely get to the Nurnberg Christkindl Markt and Rothenburg (visit Kathe Wohlfahrt's shop...used to be friends with them when they ran it out of their basement!).

that one is very similar to the one I had and YES, you CAN submerge it! At that point, I even had a plaster cast which was a HUGE no-no to get wet and it never did. With the newer materials (fiberglass), it should be no problem at all for her to go swimming or to the water parks.

Other parks may not let you ride, but I have never heard of WDW CMs telling anyone they could not.
Not to say it would never happen, but WDW CMs have posted in the past that telling someone they could not ride would be so rare that it almost never happens. If they did, it would only be for safety reasons.
