We got TP'ed on Monday night. Now I just assumed it was my graduating seniors from my HS, although they usually don't come out to my town (1/2 hour away). It was a pretty good job and they were very careful of the landscaping and landscape lights (good thing, since we just did all that work this weekend!). I didn't think 8th graders would be that good and/or careful.
Come to find out yesterday that a whole bunch of girls (50) that are graduating NEXT year, incoming seniors, decided to TP the incoming 9th graders who are known to them--athletes, cheerleaders, the more popular girls. They broke into smaller groups and spread out throughout town.
Now I was NEVER popular but DD is. She told me she knew a ton of people at froshfest, she knows all the kids who go to our church, and plus she'll be a cheerleader. She's one of those kids who is friendly to everybody. Plus one of the older ringleaders is the older sister of one of her best friends.
I have mixed feelings about this whole thing! Good for DD for being liked enough for this--I know it sounds stupid to say that, but I would never want my kids to be as unpopular and miserable as I was. On the other hand, as a HS teacher, I don't want her to start hanging with a lot of older kids and possibly getting into trouble beyond her years. For example, she will not be dating until 10th grade as planned, no matter who knocks at the door.
BTW, I read in the paper today that the dad who's house these girls were staying at got a ticket for a "nuisance gathering" or something--knowing that the 50 girls staying at his house were planning to TP. Some people in the ritzy part of town didn't take it so good-naturedly and called the police, and this dad took the heat for it and got a citation, even though the girls in that group went back and picked those yards up.
