(I posted this last year for PC 1.0)

Thought ya'll would like to know that the Internet Service onboard is provided by a 128kb (bi-directional) VSAT connection. What does that mean to you? It means that everyone on board is sharing roughly the equivilant of 2 dial-up lines to the internet. Add a 2 second round trip latency ( the satellites are 22000 miles away, there is no escaping the speed of light) and that means you are in for trip back 10 years for internet service. So before you sign-up for the all you can eat Internet, know that you are not eating very much. Do not feel too bad. Most offshore oil rigs only get 56kb across a very old microwave system (was owned by Shell Oil) for their internet

The cellular (and internet) are back-hauled across the MTN VSAT network. They are the cruise industry standard for customer connectivity. They also provide the Satellite TV feed as well.

So to all the geeky folks, like myself, here you go. I would not count on uploading many 15 megapixel, RAW pictures back to the shore.

But, Texas Mike will have his own dedicated uplink to the satellite, right Mike?

Mike...Can you get into the DCL systems and carve out about 500KB of dedicated bandwidth so I can use Skype during PC 2.0? I have a way to unblock it from the ships firewalls and filters. :lmao:

You can use Skype on board, you just have to know how! :rolleyes1

LOL! Tell me about it! I had a IT director in a county tell me I couldn't make an outgoing remote desktop connection because his firewall was "Da Bomb". So I called my office and had them put remote desktop onto port 449 and away I went!

;)

:thumbsup2 Firewall's are only as good as their rules!! And there is not a patch or an update that will fix "stupid."

Unless things have changed recently, there is no more "all you can eat" package on DCL. On my last 2 cruises, I had to choose from several packages, all of which had a finite number of minutes. Prices ranged from 30 cents to 75 cents per minute, depending on the package purchased.

Hey there Pete..... He's mine! :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Leave me my simple pleasures. I love Walter more than life itself, but a technical conversation with him usually involves the question "how do I turn this on" (and yes, before the perverts chime in, we're talking COMPUTERS) .

Feed him some shrimp then maybe he'll get it!! :rotfl2:
