DCL for Seniors

Hi - I'm looking for honest opinions and real feedback from people who have done this please. I've read all the threads I can find and still can't make up my mind. Looking at a Very Merrytime cruise out of Galveston in Dec 2026 for my 60th birthday. I love all things Disney, but my husband is more neutral - he merely tolerates my Disney love! This trip would scratch my Disney itch without another trip to Orlando and me doing the single rider line on all the rides that he won't do any more. Plus we live nearby in Houston so no planes. And he does like cruising, we usually cruise on NCL at least once a year. Would 2 seniors enjoy DCL without any kids? Our 26YO daughter may join us. TIA!

We have done it adults only. Enjoyment for us really depends on the ship...we love the smaller classic ships. The Wish class ships have large dining rooms and chaotic dining due to the shows, and the adult venues are small.

It really depends what you (and your husband) want to do. Not having kids isn't an issue, since kids are mostly in the kids' clubs, at dinner, and at shows. There will be plenty of other people not surrounded by kids.

My husband is happy sitting on the deck reading, so even though he doesn't go to shows or character greetings, he has a good time.
My son and his girlfriend, in their mid 20s, joined us on a recent Magic cruise. They enjoyed active excursions and didn't do much on the ship except eat and rest.
I like the theater shows and watching kids interact with the characters. I also enjoy trivia, which happens throughout the day, and the live music at night.

If those appeal to you and your family, then cruising from Galveston makes sense. If there are other activities that your husband really enjoys on NCL, you'd want to make sure there is something equally appealing to him on Disney.

My parents are close to 80 and we just got back from a Merrytime cruise for my 50th birthday. We all had a blast. One of the best parts of cruising is that everyone can do their own thing and you don't have to worry about anyone getting lost. We're all on the same ship...see you at dinner! The Christmas stuff was fantastic and we really enjoyed just roaming the ship and taking in the ambiance. Highly recommend!

We sail as adults only (61 and 58) multiple times per year. We enjoy the adult only sun deck, adult only trivia, live music and dining. You can avoid most kids if you have late dining and don’t go to the shows or family activities.

We have been on many cruises where the adult only cruisers vastly outnumbered the kids on board.

We were in our 60s when we started cruising. Our first cruise (ever) was Disney. We've now completed 13 DCL cruises.

IMO, yes, as long as you like DIsney (or even just tolerate it), DCL is for you.

My husband and I are both in our 60's and we love DCL. I was supposed to celebrate my 60th this year on the Fantasy, but we had to cancel last minute. Will be making that up this next February, this time on the Treasure. If I was able to sail without having to fly, I would do it more often for certain. We have done one Merrytime cruise before and it was fabulous. My husband is like yours, he tolerates my fascination with Disney, but he appreciates the cleanliness of the ships and the personal service.

I’m in my late 50’s, travel solo, and I still love Disney. I’ve done 9 DCL cruises and did the Very Merrytime Cruise on the Treasure a couple of weeks ago for my birthday. It was my first time doing that cruise, but probably won’t be my last. I had a blast! There was so much to do and I really enjoyed getting my picture taken with Santa and the characters in their holiday best. The decorations really put you in the holiday mood and you can be as active or leisurely as you want.

Absolutely! DCL does a great job of providing places for adults to enjoy themselves just like they do for children. We are older than you and enjoy all our DCL cruises being Platinum and having 3 more booked for 2026.

We are in our mid 50s and also live in the Houston area. Our last 3 cruises as a couple have been Disney (Bermuda, Alaska, and Southern Caribbean). We’ve also signed up for a January cruise out of Galveston. Sharing what we like as adults in case it helps:

• Promenade Deck 4. Very quiet. Lounge chairs for reading a good novel or watching the horizon.
• Disney Magic is one of the original classic ships that we like.
• Some good adult entertainment having comedians.
• We enjoy the on board old style grand movie theater. Will catch a movie or two.
• If you like drinks, we find the Disney bars to be some of the best on the high seas. We did the chocolate liquor tasting last cruise and loved it.
• The adults only pool does tend to be only adults.
• We do the second dining. Usually few kiddos plus as a couple we’ve always been paired with other adults.
• Service is fantastic, ship is always clean.
• We do speciality dining at Palo every sailing. The food and service are fantastic. Again, few if any kiddos.
• The main shows are entertaining.
• The ship tours (forget the name) are awesome. The guide discusses all the design choices and construction thought put into building the ship. We do the tour every time.
• We still enjoy a few character meet and greets especially the classics: Pluto, Goofy, Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy.

Overall you can do as little or as much as you like just like on any cruise. Everyone from crew to guests are happy to be there. Such a good vibe.

Lastly, give it a try at least once. We have the luxury of simply driving down and hopping on the boat. Once aboard you’ll meet lots of folks flying in from all over the country to cruise out of Galveston. It’s physically in our back yard.

Update, our 20 year old daughter will join us for this Galveston cruise.

Two adults, just hit 60. Used to cruise with kids, now we cruise by ourselves, mostly (some times our young adults join us ). We like Disney, but not too crazy. We hang out in the adult areas, do adult trivia and evening shows. Rest, eat, cocktails. I absolutely love watching the kids attending the royal gathering with the princesses and Jack's diaper race. The service, the ship and the general overall vibe is excellent. We always enjoy ourselves.
