DCL DVD...I guess people don't watch?

I have NO PROBLEM with any question being asked....especially here and especially since I have asked, and will continue to ask, my share of basic questions.....ok, MORE than my share.

That being said, some of the queries here are really quite clearly explained in the DVD. Is it that people look online for some basic DCL questions and never watch the cruise DVD before ending up here, that they scan the DVD and don't REALLY watch it, or is the DVD more confusing/vague than I see it?

Again, I always encourage newbies to ask as many questions as possible but I AM curious if people watch the DVDs the same way that I do..........

oh, and I also wonder why I received only 1 response t my sail away music query.

I agree with mmouse37 that a lot of people probably aren't even aware a DCL DVD exists. Plus, even if you do order it, it takes a few weeks to get. So someone could book a cruise, be excited and have tons of questions, and pop on here to find out the answers. I have no problem with any and all questions being asked. Let's face it, most questions could be answered by DCL's website or a Google search, which is a lot more available than the planning DVD. But then we wouldn't have anything to do all day.

I'm a hard core DCL fan and I get the DVD's because I can't contain my excitement, especially when the NEW SHIPS came out! I needed major deets. But unfortunately not every one is a savvy vacationer and or knows about the DVD. This upcoming cruise I have my bestie coming and she has never been on a cruise at all! Now...I did get her a disc (lol), but if I hadn't she would not have a clue about the disc. People may also assume the DVD costs etc. But I think that is one of main PURPOSES of this forum though, to be able to ask questions! I don't mind helping people at all, no matter how basic, because I just love to BLAB blab blab about the cruises! :yay: But also the cruise DVD is pretty basic and if you never cruised before you want to make sure you have everything covered! I mean, how many people can say they go on floating hotels?! So if anyone is tired of newbies send 'em my way! I think I burned every one out around home with my over excited cruise talk and it will help me pass the time!! LOVE DCL! Woo! 191 days til my trip...sigh. Plus not to be negative, but you certainly don't have to read threads with questions that are covered in the DVD. I remember when I made a thread on how to post pictures on here....even though it's probably hidden somewhere in some Disboard basics and directions...who reads directions? 21st century! Ha ha ha!

We have done 6 cruises, coming up on #7, but we still get the DVD's every year. They are informative to a degree, but they are not as good as they use to be. For the most part, they just touch on the subjects without going into details. I can see how folks would still have questions after watching it and I personally enjoy sharing our experiences with people who have not cruised before. Having said that, I agree people may not be aware the DVD's are available and free-they are a good starting point when planning a cruise.

Regarding the sail away music, I honestly could not tell you what they play...we are usually too excited to pay attention to it and are just in the moment. Besides, once the character's are finish with their part, we usually leave.

I don't think anyone knowing (or not knowing) about a DVD translates to being a "savvy vacationer" (or not). I know there is a DVD available... but like PP said, I didn't want to get the marketing spin on things, I figured the video was more for people who haven't quite decided on DCL yet, so they can sell you on it. If it's anything like the little videos that go with online checkout, I;m glad I passed. :)

I have watched the DVD several times before our first cruise, knowing full well that it is pure marketing material. It does have information, but it is all from a sales perspective. You get individual bias here, but none of us are producing advertisements or trying to sell anything.

not trying to be snotty....if you read my disclaimer (first sentences) you would understand the tone of my question.....

I never thought someone might book a DCL cruise before they learned that a DVD exists or before watching it....just never crossed my mind as a possibility. Who knew? Not me.

I guess I'm not impulsive enough to book a vacation without a degree of over planning. :confused3

as to sail away music, there are lists, ad infinitum, about cruise mood music and even sail away music. To my knowledge, the sail away lists are dated. Simply looking for an update on what they play now....no biggie

I told my dh I was going to order the dvd online and he snorted and said "people still watch dvd's? just ask your questions on that DisBoard site you like so much"

Friends of ours cruised DCL this spring so we did end up borrowing their dvd and skimming it.

Like others have said, I like hearing the experiences that others have had. Before we went to WDW the first time we ordered and watched the DVD. When we arrived at the MK for the first time we were dripping in sweat, it was crowded and we saw a few meltdowns. None of which has clouded our love of the parks, but we commented that none of that stuff makes it onto the DVD. As much as I would love for everything to be the sunshine and pixie dust shown in the DVD, I want to prepare for the reality of the situation.

yeah....the DVDs are a little saccharine, to be sure, but it IS a sales pitch. I just meant that some of the most basic questions asked here are dealt with on the DCL site and the DVD. I would read up first, but I guess I'm in a minority..........

But then we wouldn't have anything to do all day.

SO true.

I guess I'm not impulsive enough to book a vacation without a degree of over planning. :confused3

Nothing over-planning about watching marketing material. That's what the Dis is for.

I gave up on marketing DVDs after they stopped making awesome DVDs like the 2006(?) WDW DVD. That one was amazing and still has a following. All others pale in comparison.
