Disney Cruise Line to launch sailings out of Miami

By Gene Sloan, USA TODAY

(8:50 AM) -- Watch out, Carnival and Royal Caribbean. Entertainment giant Disney is moving in on your turf.

The Disney Cruise Line today will announce its first voyages out of Miami -- a cruise hub long dominated by locally-based Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line.
Disney plans to offer more than two dozen winter sailings out of the city starting in December, even as it cuts back on cruises on the West Coast. The trips will take place aboard the 1,754-passenger Disney Wonder, which is re-locating to Miami from Los Angeles and no longer will operate itineraries to the West Coast of Mexico.
"We've been pleased with the itineraries in Mexico, but guests are looking for more," Disney President Karl Holz tells USA TODAY in an exclusive interview. "It was time to explore other options."

Disney's move comes as cruise lines struggle to fill voyages to the West Coast of Mexico -- a fact executives blame on negative perceptions of the region in the wake of recent violence. Many lines, including Disney, have cancelled stops in the Western Mexico port of Mazatlan over the past year due to security concerns while continuing to call at Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas.
Miami will become Disney's second home port in Florida, joining longtime hub Port Canaveral, where the line began in 1998. Port Canaveral will remain home to the line's two newest ships, the one-year-old Disney Dream and soon-to-debut Disney Fantasy.
"We're very happy with Port Canaveral," Holz notes.
The Disney Wonder's new sailings out of Miami will kick off on Dec. 23 with one six-night and one seven-night trip to the Caribbean. The ship then will operate two dozen four- and five-night Bahamas and Western Caribbean cruises in early 2012 on three different routes:
-- A five-night itinerary with stops in Cozumel, Mexico and Castaway Cay, Disney's private island in the Bahamas (Departure dates: Jan. 5 and 19; Feb. 2 and 16; March 2, 16 and 30; April 13 and 27).
-- A five-night itinerary with stops in Grand Cayman and Cozumel (Departure dates: Jan. 14 and 28; Feb. 11 and 25; March 11 and 25; April 8 and 22).
-- A four-night itinerary with stops in Key West, Fla.; Nassau, Bahamas; and Castaway Cay (Departure dates: Jan. 10 and 24; Feb. 7 and 21; March 7 and 21; April 4 and 18; and May 2).
Holz says Miami is appealing as a home port for several reasons, including its location near top Caribbean ports.
"The proximity of Miami to a number of destinations gives you a cruise product that has a lot of richness in a four- or five-day itinerary," he says. Compared to Port Canaveral, "it's that much closer to Grand Cayman and Cozumel."
Disney also expects the new Miami sailings to appeal to the local South Florida drive-in market, and to vacationers from Latin America who have easy access to the city by air, says Holz.
"Our goal is certainly to exploit the Latin America market to a more significant level," he says, noting that Brazilians, in particular, already are big fans of Disney's theme parks on land.
In addition to the new Miami sailings, Disney today also will announce plans for more Caribbean cruises out of Galveston, Texas.
Disney will extend the inaugural season of the 1,754-passenger Disney Magic out of Galveston, which begins this fall, through May 2013, with additional six- and eight-night voyages to the Western Caribbean. The six-night cruises will include port calls in Grand Cayman and Cozumel. The eight-night sailings will include calls in Key West, Grand Cayman, Costa Maya and Cozumel.
Disney today also will announce plans to return to Europe in 2013 after skipping the region this year. In other changes, the line also plans to operate its Alaska cruises in 2013 out of Vancouver instead of Seattle

Disney Cruise Line to return to Europe in 2013
By Gene Sloan, USA TODAY

(8:50 AM) -- The Disney Cruise Line will resume sailings in Europe in 2013 after skipping the region this year.

Disney today will announce plans to send the 1,754-passenger Disney Magic back to the Mediterranean for the summer season of 2013, basing the ship in Barcelona. The Disney Magic has spent the past two summers sailing out of Barcelona but, as previously announced, will spend the upcoming summer of 2012 sailing out of New York.

"We're very happy with the way New York has performed (in sales), but a European presence is something we want long term," Disney Cruise Line President Karl Holz tells USA TODAY in an exclusive interview.

While Disney has offered seven-, ten- and 11-night cruises out of Barcelona in the past, the 2013 season will bring two new, 12-night itineraries as well as seven-night trips:

-- A 12-night "Mediterranean with Greece" routing that will include the line's first calls in Kusadasi, Turkey (near the ruins of Ephesus); the Greek island of Mykonos; and Piraeus, Greece (near Athens). The sailings also will have calls in Villefranche, France (near Nice); La Spezia, Italy; Civitavecchia, Italy (near Rome); and Valetta, Malta. Departure dates: June 15 and July 13, 2013.
-- A 12-night "Mediterranean with Venice" routing that will include the line's first calls in Venice, Italy and Dubrovnik, Croatia. The sailings also will have calls in Villefranche; La Spezia; Civitavecchia; Naples, Italy; and Valetta, Malta. Departure dates: June 27 and July 25, 2013.

Disney also plans its first four-night sailings in the Mediterranean, departing on July 9 and Aug. 6, 2013. Designed to be paired with land-based tours, the shorter trips will feature stops in Villefranche and Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
The line will offer six seven-night trips in the region that include calls in Villefranche, La Spezia, Civitavecchia and Naples. Departure dates for the seven-night trips are June 1 and 8, 2013; and Aug. 10, 17, 24 and 31, 2013.
Holz says the company is experimenting with different itinerary lengths in the Mediterranean to see what is most appealing to its customers over the long term.
"Whether it's seven nights or 10 or 11 (nights) like we've had, or 12, we'll continue to test to see what product works with our guests," he says.
Holz notes that the company is developing a set of land tours that can be paired with the new four-night sailings out of Barcelona for a rounded European experience. Details of the new tours will be announced at a later date.
The shorter sailings out of Barcelona also are "an opportunity to expose Disney to the (local) Spanish market," he says.

Fares for the four-night Mediterranean cruises will start at $796 per person, based on double occupancy. Fares for the seven- and 12-night Mediterranean cruises will start at $1,015 and $2,244 per person, respectively.

Well, at least the Alaska cruises are going back to Vancouver. The itinerary out of Seattle was really bad. Shorter port times, less Inside Passage time.

Thanks for posting this. I saw a little about this on the Disney Parks Blog as well. Cool Itins... but I was hoping for Bermuda. sad face. Hehe. I do hope that these are some exciting ports for others though! :) If money was no option I would go anywhere DCL would take me!

The only new ports are on the Mediterranean cruises (and there are several!) Aside from embarking/debarking in Miami, the Bahamas & Caribbean ports are all the same old, same old, just in new combinations.

They're doing the ABD Add-ons again for the Med cruises (7 and 12 nights), as well as the pre-days. Makes sense, since ABD does a Greece itinerary now.

Does this mean another PC Cruise the beginning of Dec? Since the Wonder has to be in Miami in time for the first sailing on 12/23/2012 it makes sense for it to be the beginning to mid Dec. Something I would definitely be interested in!!

Glad to hear the Wonder is coming back to the east coast

i was sure disney would go back to vancouver in 2013...
going out of seattle is idiotic...
it might be cheaper to fly to seattle, but that itinerary is TERRIBLE!!!!!

i bet they end up deep discounting some of the sailings this summer...
who wants to sail out of seattle????? just doesn't make any sense at all...

miami makes a lot of sense to me.....the ports may be the same, but when they leave from miami, they can do it in 4 or 5 days....much better for people like me who just can't dedicate 7 days to a cruise...
i think it's a great addition to their offerings!!!!

as for europe, i'm considering it....
i saw that they're going to croatia, which is absolutely stunningly gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous....
and they're going to greece, which is nice...
but apparently they're also going to turkey, where i won't go if they pay me, so it might not be workable for me.......

I'm just not understanding the Miami sailings. With a perfectly good port at Canaveral, why go to Miami? Its only slightly easier to fly to (the port is near the airport) but there is no real opportunity for Disney to leverage the guests into a stay at WDW before/after. Is there an entirely new market segment that Disney is trying to appeal to?

Or perhaps its just that the single terminal at Port Canaveral would have conflicts with three ships trying to use it each week. :confused3

I'm wondering why they didn't choose Port Everglades. The only two reasons I could think of that they'd choose Miami is either breaks in the port charges, or maybe Disney is hoping to market the Wonder to Latin American guests.

That makes sense Mike. I'm guessing the port charge thing is a big issue. Still I wonder (small w) about the Latin American part since I'd think attracting them to the theme parks would be easier out of PC.

I have been dreaming about a PC repo. Now if I can just find some companions for the May 2013 cruise. I do love the sea days. Any takers?

Val & I were very tempted by that. Wound up deciding instead on a 7-nigh west-coast from LA to Vancouver. I believe that's right after the PC that you're looking at.

the miami itinerary appeals to me - a much shorter cruise that still gets me to grand cayman....i'm not interested in the 7 days it takes out of PC...

also, there is a very large cruise market in miami......so maybe in their market research, disney determined that there's a market there for them...

as for the south american market, they do fly through miami....that's one of the main gateways into the US (miami and NYC)..
my kids fly via miami on their way to south america...
it would be easy for them to stop on the way home for a 4 day cruise on disney...

i assume that disney did extensive market research before they decided to try this.....i assume they had hoped on staying in LA, but that market didn't work out as they'd hoped....so now they're trying this....if it works for them, great, if not, they'll try something else..

and now that i think about it, when flying from overseas, it's usually MUCH cheaper to fly into miami than into orlando...

there are more than a few Brits who fly into Miami, then drive to Orlando to save on airfare...

if DCL added transfers to WDW either before or after the miami cruises, it would reduce airfare for those of us coming from the right side of the pond...

If only we had a bullet train from Miami to Orlando ... :rolleyes1
