DC Traffic - Thanksgiving Weekend

I would like to know if anyone can give me any history about the traffic in the DC area on Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving weekend..

We're leaving on the Auto-Train on Friday, 11/29 and I'm trying to determine if we should drive down mid-day on Thanksgiving and stay overnight or leave early Friday morning. We're coming from Northern, NJ...

We've done the trip a few times and are VERY familiar with the route and how long it usually takes, but I've never traveled over a holiday weekend. We've always left around 8am on the day of the trip and always arrived in Lorton with plenty of time to spare.

Friday shouldn't be to bad. But you never know. A fender bender could cause a back up. But if no accidents then it should be fine. Now if you were coming through on Wednesday I would say forget it..
