Daytona Beach/Race week ??

Ok, getting down there, leaving Sat. Everyone really wants to check out Daytona Beach-- but it's race week. How does this effect beach crowds? I know nothing about Daytona beach or the race. I'm assuming they race around a track ;~) (!!). Is the track at the beach? Are we nuts to consider this with traffic etc. It would be a day trip. Can anyone give me any info??

I am sure it will be crowded when you want to go. The track is several miles from the beach.
