We are thinking about driving out to Vero to visit (never been) and maybe do the Saturday Character Breakfast. We are not staying the night. Will they let us on the resort grounds? Does most of the resort area need key card access? I'm on the fence whether it's worth the 2 hour drive each way for the visit.

You will have access to the restaurants, spa and gift shops. You can also pool hop (subject to blackout dates and capacity restrictions) to Vero if you are staying on points at a WDW DVC Resort.

I would wait and at least plan a couple day stay. 4 hours on the road to take a look isn't worth it IMO. You will get a better feel for the place if you stay for a few days.

We did this 2 summers ago. I called and told them I was coming. When we got in we went to the front desk and I'm pretty sure they gave us passes. We were at wdw for about 10 days and I wanted to see vero to know if I wanted to stay. It was almost 2 hours. So I was glad I went because I wanted to see the resort. If you're just looking for a resort/pool day, I save the wear and tear and pool hop at the world. Also, the beach was too steep at that time for my dd4 to able to enjoy. So we had a good day and I was glad to have been able to "try out" vero.
