Last Sunday we had a visit from Hurricane Ike around here. 75 mph sustained winds for several hours. Thousands of trees down all around town and 400,000 without electricity for 48 hours. Roofs and homes are damaged everywhere, on every block. Today is the 3rd day of no school because 48 schools here in Columbus are still without power as is one of the bus compounds. All our emergency electrical crews are in Texas; things are moving very slowly. A small amount of neighborhoods got power back last night and hopefully more will come on today. We need to get these children back to school and our fridges restocked. As of yesterday, ours was cleaned out. I had to drive 20 miles to find ice and fuel but brought back a whole van load of coolers and ice bags as there was none to be had. The positives are that the weather is cool enough to leave windows open and there is no need for a/c as well as the fact that families are reconnecting with no electronic devices. We've bbq'd with the neighbors twice this week as we're all cooking the contents of our freezers. It's kinda dangerous to have our children playing too far away because there are downed lines and huge trees/branches everywhere. We are in great shape compared to Texas so I hate to complain but it's possibly going to be next week before we get back to school and we'll have no 'snow days' left so we'll be tacking them on the end of the school year in June! Bah!:sad2:

Some of our schools in the N.Ky/Cincinnati area are going back to school today finally, but some with no buses. Praying for all of you still without power.

Wow, aren't winds of 75 mph considered Huricane? Stay safe & hopefully the power will be back on soon.

From todays newspaper,

1.3 million homes and businesses statewide here in Ohio still without power

I feel for you. Our power was only out 16 hours, but lots of people around here in SW PA are still without power, and a lot of them can't pump water from their wells without it either. It was strange, we had all that wind and no rain.

My mom is in central Ohio and usually loses power if someone sneezes. Luckily this time she didn't. Positive thoughts go out to those of you outside of TX that were also victims of IKE.

I think there's going to be a lot of schools closed - in many areas of the country - for a very looong time.. :(

We have no power, no water, no phone, no cell phones. They're projecting we will be restored Sunday night!

We had a hell of wind/rain storm on Sunday night here in NE Ohio. Nothing compared to what others went through, of course. But the - I don't know what it is called, the rain roof thing that covers the pumps and pumping area at the gas station - one of those things was swaying and lifting and I thought the flippin thing was going to fly right off. Couldn't have been too well designed, though, as the one at the station across the street was quite stable.

We lost some awfully big branches off the trees - they'll have to be cut down before they can be hauled off. And the power went out, but the generator takes care of that, so no big whup.

But, again, nothing like Texas. Just a wind/rain storm that is remarkable for these parts. I'd take one a week if it meant no snow.

I got my electricity back this morning (over 60 hours without). :sad1: I didn't have any structural damage to my house, but my brother did. I never though I'd see hurricane force winds in Kentucky!

I was born in Cleveland Ohio. Hard to believe Hurricane force winds reached Ohio. I've lived in South Florida for 24 years now so I know what you are going through. In 2004 we got hit by 2 hurricanes in 3 weeks. We were out of power for 2 weeks. Schools were also closed for 2 weeks. My daughter was in Kindergarten and my son was only 5 months old. It was very hot here. I honestly dont know how we got through it. Halloween was cancelled because you couldn't walk around the neighborhood. It was horrible. I hope you dont have to go without power much longer and everyone can get back to a normal life. :grouphug:

Yeppers, it was remnants of Ike and another front combining to give us a taste of the coast. No rain, fortunately, just wind! Like shortbun said, nothing like Texas but still not fun. (Except for the kids out of school!)

Part of the problem with getting power back (other than the extent of the storm) is because some of our local crews were sent to TX to help restore power after the BIG storm. They've been recalled and we're getting help from other places, so we're slowly coming back on. Some people won't have power until Monday. At least the weather has been nice.

Ike hit us here, too.

We lost power Sunday night... and then according to the news media "Due to Allegheny's "quick fix" on Sunday, more customers were left without electricity this morning."

That'd be me!
A day off of work and I had an excuse to just stay in bed! :)

I live on the North side of Columbus Ohio (State Route 161 & Cleveland Ave) and the power is still out in some parts of the area were I live hopefully soon like today till then I will stay with my dad

Nearly 300,000 people are still without power in the greater Cincinnati area.

Mine went out Sunday at 8:30 PM, came back on Tuesday about 4:45 PM Many of my co-workers are still without power, many have wells so no running water.

Well, I think we were some of the lucky few who didn't lose power to either our home or our office.....by the grace of God.

DH and I had just restocked the freezer and fridge the day before the storm hit. I am so glad we didn't have to throw all that food out. We did lose a portion of shingles off our roof, but nothing compared to others that I see in our neighborhood.

The kids went back to school for the first time today with a 2 hr. delay.

I feel so badly for everyone suffering from Ike....everyone is in my prayers. :grouphug:

Checking in from the Hilliard, Ohio area (suburb of Columbus). I have never seen winds that strong here. We just got power back last night, after losing it around 4 p.m. Sunday. I had gone to the grocery store on Sunday, and had to pitch the whole fridge/freezer. Ugh! I was glad the trash guys came yesterday. Our chimmey cap flew off and we actually found someone to fix it by Monday afternoon! Lots of downed trees & power lines. Lots of people still without power. Our schools reopened today with only one remaining closed due to no power. I still do not have electric at work so we are closed. It may be this weekend before it's restored.

Overall, we feel very fortunate. Luckily, we didn't have any rain, so no problems with water. It's amazing tho. that the winds were recorded at over 75+ miles, after traveling all that way from Texas.

I just returned from a 3 day business trip in Columbus and Dayton. Wow! There were trees and branches everywhere.

The hardest part was trying to find a place for us to go to dinner. So many people didn't have electricity so everyone seemed to be dining out. All of the restaurants were packed and the topic of conversation was "Do you have power?"

I just couldn't believe the number of trees I saw down all over the place.
