DAY THREE
Our bags were packed and ready inside our room next to the door by 7:45am. We went down for breakfast and by the time we came back up to our room our bags were gone – spirited away with a little magic and pixie dust.
We met back in the lobby at 8:45am and headed onto the bus to our next destination. On the bus we were offered bottled water and snacks. DD loved the German brand Kinder (chocolate), Milka (chocolate) and Haribo (gummies).
It was about a 2-hour drive and we stopped in the quaint town of Alsfeld. There, we met the Grimm brothers and watched a reenactment of Little Red Riding Hood.
We walked along cobblestone streets among homes and buildings dating back from the 15th/16th centuries. Many of these buildings are still in use today.
We had a picnic style lunch inside of the Alsfeld museum due to the off and on rain. Lunch included turkey sandwiches, chips, fruit, cookies, beer, wine, water and apple cider. We arrived in town at about 11am, toured and did lunch until 1:15pm. Then we had 45 min. on our own to further explore the town. Unfortunately, it was Sunday so almost all the shops were closed. Our guides suggested a little café that served “spaghetti” ice cream sundaes. The sundae was supposed to look like spaghetti but since DD and I were full from lunch we did not try this. We walked around the town until it was time to be back on the bus.
The next portion of our trip took 1hr 45minutes to reach Waldeck and our castle/hotel Schloss Waldeck. It was cool and quite windy outside but we managed to get some nice photos off the terrace overlooking Lake Edersee before heading in to the “Knights Hall” for a quick reception.
The hotel staff offered lemonade and finger sandwiches while Nadine got everyone’s room keys. Lake Edersee is a man made lake. In the 1600’s a dam was built and the town at the bottom was flooded. In the summer if the lake level gets too low you can see some of the roofs from the town that was flooded. We had a room with a small terrace that had a pretty view of the town of Waldeck and the surrounding countryside.
Schloss Waldeck was used frequently as a prison. We toured through the crime and punishment museum – admission was free by mentioning we were with Disney.
Dinner was at the castle restaurant Altane. It had gorgeous views over the lake. Dinner options were braised beef w/spaetzle, pork goulash w/potatoes and veggies, salad w/chicken or fresh fish. I tried the goulash and it was very good. Alcoholic drinks were not included tonight. The junior adventurers went with the ABD guides after dinner for games and a Disney movie. The movie was “Tangled” so DD was very happy with that. The adults stayed, chatted and had dessert (vanilla ice cream with red berry compote and crisp wafers).
