Hi Guys,:wave:

I'm planning my next Day Six segment
:scratchin ... does anyone have any suggestions on what you'd like to hear about next? :idea:

Editing to add Sherry's suggestion to list them, and to add new suggestions.

Thanks, everyone! Please keep them coming. Your perspective is really helpful. :)

  • Aquarium of the Pacific (Long Beach) & whale watch tour
  • Botanical Gardens: Arboretum, Descanso, Huntington Library
  • California Missions (focusing on San Juan Capistrano, and touching on San Gabriel, and San Fernando missions)

  • Griffith Park Observatory (Nancy did this)
  • Hollywood Bowl (Nancy did this)
  • Julian Drive - drive down the coast to Oceanside, cut to Julian, and on to Anza Borrego, past Salton Sea, Indio, and back to Disneyland (all-day outing)

  • Santa Barbara, Solvang (all day outing)
  • San Diego - Old Town

  • Western Beaches (Santa Monica, Venice)
  • Western Beaches (Manhattan, Hermosa, Redondo Beach, and going around to San Pedro)

  • San Diego 101 series
  • Sea World 101 series
  • Universal Studios & City Walk 101 series

(I'll add as I remember them)

    • - Rise of the Jack O' Lanterns celebrations (Halloween time)
    • - Palm Springs & Aerial tramway / Palm Desert
    • - Nixon Library

NEW IDEAS

@Sherry E
  • Halloween-themed Day Six. Rise of the Jack O'Lanterns (dates have not been announced yet) takes place in October, and the photos look very intriguing! http://therise.org/ (Planning for 2016)
  • Long Beach (Queen Mary, Aquarium of the Pacific, Shoreline Village, etc.) DONE
  • In keeping with the Long Beach theme, for Halloween you could do Dark Harbor (although that is horror-based) and for the holiday season you could do CHILL at the Queen Mary. Thinking about Halloween themed for September/October
  • Next year, closer to Easter, you could visit the Bunny Museum -- http://thebunnymuseum.com/

@calilou
  • Palm Springs Aerial Tramway? California desert and Santa Rosa mountains, Palm Desert (Adding for 2016)

@Daisybelle
  • how to get to those places without a car? Like if a person wants to go to Universal for the day they would take X bus and it would take this amount of time. That type of thing is what I'm stuck on as I have no desire to drive a rental car there. (Is there still an interest for this?)
@kristabelle13
  • Getty Museum & Villa.

    Also, when travelling in the U.S., I love to visit universities to explore - they often have museums or exhibits that are fantastic - do UCLA or USC (or any others) have any worth visiting?

    Also, what about Runyon Canyon or the hike up to the Hollywood sign? I think Nancy mentioned it on the observatory episode, but just sort of in passing.
@dina444444
  • Museum of Natural History & Science Museum
@texasgingerbread
  • Getty Museum, San Diego Zoo vs. San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Cool things in LA (Last Bookstore, Christus Statue of Jesus Christ by Lladro at the LA LDS Temple Visitors Center, Bronson Canyon).
@SoCalTrojanSkip
  • For Disney Fans:
    How about Griffith Park....?
    Traveltown, Walt's Carolwood Barn and of course the Carousel that inspired Disneyland.
    A Summer Concert at the Hollywood Bowl

    For Film Fans:
    The Warner Bros. studios does a tour, but I've heard it's a little pricey.
    Hike To Vasquez Rocks (Various Westerns/Star Trek Episodes)
    Malibu Creek State Park (M*A*S*H)

    For the Outdoor Minded:
    Maybe the out of town guest could see if their favorite baseball team is in town and catch a Dodgers or Angels Game.
    Hike to the "Bridge To Nowhere" in Azusa.
    Tour The Rose Bowl

    More Museums:
    LACMA (with the iconic lamp post installation)
    Peterson Automotive Museum
    Southwest Museum (Griffith Park)
    Glendale Museum of Neon Art

    For the Holidays:
    I've heard the Mission Inn in Riverside is spectacular. Also Griffith Park does a drive through Christmas light installation, and the LA Zoo does a Christmas Installation.
    See the Floats for the Rose Parade being decorated in Pasadena

    Just For Fun:
    San Luis Obispo 101
    Hearst Castle

What are some of the places you've already covered (assuming that some folks have not listened to the Day Six segments of the podcast), so we also have an idea/sense of what hasn't been done yet?

Has anyone ever suggested the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway? It's a bit of a drive at roughly two hours one way, but a great way to experience the California desert and Santa Rosa mountains. My husband and I recently stayed several days in Palm Desert and did the tramway and were super impressed. A really neat experience. There are restaurants and hiking up top, the second of which would be a neat contrast to the traveler's Disney days.

It would probably more a Day 6-Day 7 thing, but maybe cover Santa Barbara.

It looks like it's a family-friendly event (not a horror-based event, in other words).

Oooh, nice idea ... maybe Indio, Palm Springs, the Palm Springs Tramway & Santa Rosa Mountains?

That makes me think of also - Big Bear area, and maybe Idyllwild?

I know people who've done that and I think Nancy (@YellowMickeyPonchos ) did talk about it, but need to make sure.

Thank you for posting the list, Mary Jo -- that's very helpful!

Love these ideas. Could probably do the Bunny Museum with Nancy. :)

And also the Petersen Auto Museum when it reopens in December -- it is getting an extreme makeover right now, and the exterior is really wild and modern-looking!

Or, when the "Museum Free For All Day" happens again in 2016 (I think it was in January this year), and most of the notable museums around SoCal offer free general admission on that one day, you could do a Day Six Museum Crawl. http://museumsla.org/news.asp

Has there been any podcasts about how to get to those places without a car?...

For those with or without a car, a visit to South Coast Plaza can be an afternoon or whole day trip. There is a shuttle bus, but the drive isn't long either. There is good shopping, fun food (and good ethnic choices in the mall or across the street -- chinese dumplings in the mall, Indian across the street, Greek & Cuban & Vietnamese a little further down the street, etc.), a movie theater across the street, etc. A day/afternoon at Fashion Island might be fun, too, but I think a car would be required for that.

With or without a car, a visit to downtown L.A. to explore the Grand Central Market and Little Tokyo can be fun. The train goes to Union Station and the Gold Line stops by the Arts District (fun food!) and Little Tokyo (Japanese American Museum, MOCA, more fun food, etc.). Is it the Red Line that goes to Pershing Square and by the GCM? The Red Line also stops by the Music Center so someone could see (and tour) Disney Hall and maybe take in a matinee or evening show at the Ahmanson or Taper. Some of the musicals there are very family friendly.

Would these suggestions work?

What about Discovery Cube? It's a great museum for kids and so fun and hands-on. Or Adventure City? Has that been covered yet? Again, a great place for little kids. Not as exciting as Disneyland, but it offers a different type of amusement park.

Edited because I just remembered one of my favorite trips--The Museum of Tolerance in L.A.. It's a very emotional experience, but one that I'm sure some people would be interested in.

What about Discovery Cube?

Agree that the Discovery Science Museum (the Cube) is a great place, especially if there also happens to be a good special exhibit. We have been to the original one in Santa Ana many times and just returned last week to check out the Sherlock Holmes exhibit which was really neat.

I think Nancy may have done a segment on the Discovery Cube.

Another nice thing about the Cube in Santa Ana is that it's so close. I think maybe ART even goes over there now? Bus and taxi are probably also other options. We just drive though since we usually have our car with us.

This can also be combined with a visit to Chinatown (dim sum maybe?). The new, free, Eli Broad Museum of contemporary art will be opening up in September. Some of the exhibits sound like they could be family friendly. Other things to do downtown are the Grammy Museum and LA Conservancy walking tours.

The US Bank Tower, currently LA's tallest skyscraper, will be opening up a public observation deck sometime this year, although no specific date has been announced.

What about the Jet Propulsion Lab's visitor center? You might combine it with the Rose Bowl or the flea market at the Rose Bowl?
And almost related to that would be to Edwards Air Force Base/ Dryden Research Center.
