Today is the first of 10 days my kids (DD4 & DS8) are off for spring break. I was letting them play in the bathroom/bathtub while I was in the next room reading. Next thing I hear is a big crash. DD4 decided she wanted to see what the inside of the toilte looked like so she took the cover off. I still don't know how she did that since the cover is so heavy! Well, it slid to the floor and broke into several pieces.

Amazingly, I remained calm while DD ran off into her room to hide behind her bed. DS & I picked up the pieces. We were VERY lucky that it didn't fall on her hand or foot or any other body part since it would have broken it. Or that it idn't fall on DS.

Yes, I am mad and we have to go off to Home Depot now to try to replace it....and explain it to DH when he gets home. But it is only a toilet and my kids are ok.

But if this is only the first day....what is in store for me over the next 9??????

Same thing happened here, except it was my dearest DH that broke it! LOL We looked at Lowe's for a replacement lid and even asked, we were told they don't just sell the lids, you have to buy a whole new toilet. So, mine is sitting on the tank broke! It looks so bad! LOL It pretty much just broke into 2 large pieces, if you find a plaea that u can buy just the lid, plmk

Maybe you could find a salvage place or similar that will sell a toilet in parts? I can't believe that you have to buy the WHOLE toilet and can't just get a lid. That's crazy!

We, too, have a tank lid that is broken in two that we haven't replaced because we can't find a place that will sell us just the lid. DH doesn't want to replace the whole toilet because he doesn't want the low-flow kind, so I got some pretty candles and tried to camoflauge it.

At least it's in the master bath so guests don't see it!

You can't buy the tank lid but you can just buy a tank and not the whole toilet. I know this because my dh did this not once but twice. Apparently he wants to be Tim Taylor. Or is it because his name is Tim?:p

Sometimes you can go to a wholesale plumbing store and get a lid. I believe they have to order it and you need the style number of the toilet. If that does not work you might be able to find one through a person that does remodeling work on bathrooms and might be able to get an old lid through them. If that does not work then you might want to put an ad in the paper asking for an old lid. There has to be someone out there that has one!!

Years ago when I was a manager for Wendys,a customer broke the tank lid and it was such an old toitel it could not be replaced. luckily my dad had an old lid and he let me have it. It did not match but it did look better than no lid.If yours is fairly new you might even be able to look up the companys web site to locate one. Back when this happened to me computers were not around so much.

I just did a search for "replacement tank lid for toilets" and SEVERAL companies came up. Try some of those. It is probably expensive to ship since they are heavy but you might be able to find one that operates in your state.

JESW, I totally empathize with you.... My kids are also home for the first day of 10.... They're just wonderful kids, but there is NO keeping them occupied!!!

Sigh. Just back from Home Depot. Just as I expected and that some of you posted - you can't just buy a lid! We have to buy the whole tank (and lid) or a whole new toilet. They did tell me that I could order just a lid but it would end up costing more than replacing the tank. I've looked on-line to replace the lid and again it's the same or more expensive than the whole thing.

But the good news is that they had more alien green Mickey ears paint chips in stock so I picked up a couple. :)

Maybe this will make you feel better--

We moved into our house in November, and the powder room had a square-shaped toilet bowl with a broken seat. Took us a while, but we finally tracked down a replacement seat. However, it cost about $350! We decided to replace the whole toilet.

Makes you want to go into the plumbing supply business, doesn't it?

I admire you :bounce: I love when people can come away from an icky situation with a little something to smile about :-) I am a glass half-empty person :-( Did you see any cheap toilets while you were out?

When it happened to me I ended up putting the broken pieces back on and covering them with a cloth toilet cover which you CAN buy.
