is this ok for my 12yr old to read? Is it very gory or have sex in it? She picked it up at the library today.

Thanks.

It has some sex, but more the PG13 type rather than R. There is some torture, some gore I suppose, but I wouldn't consider it particularly gory. It's not a horror novel or anything like that. It's no more gory than the later Harry Potter books.

I would have let my d read it at 12.

It's been so many years since I have read it, but I think it should be fine for a 12yr old. I honestly don't remember any sex so it couldn't have been that detailed.

I say let her read it, it is a very good book. Now I want to go re-read it myself.

Well.....some of the topics covered in the book are self-torture, murder, and ritualized sex. However, all are done in a very non-involved manner (as in, there are no steamy sex scenes or gratuitous gore). Also, as you're no doubt aware, the book suggests things about certain religious/historical personages which some people find disturbing or offensive. I know one person who burned her copy after reading it.

I would totally let a 12 year old read it, but then I don't believe in censoring what kids read.

My DD read Davinci and Angels and Demons when she was 11, now we have the newest one Lost Symbol I believe. I don't sensor either but I did not have any issues with either one. DD loved them

I do let her read most anything, but this is the first thing she has picked up that was not at all (or so I thought) meant for children.

She's just starting to devour the "teen" section, so I've been paying a bit more attention to what she's picking out.

Thanks! She's much more of a reader than I am.

My mom was like this as well and I seemed to turn out okay. By the time I was 12 (7th grade or so) I had already been reading Ann Rice, Stephen King, and other books like that. By that point I was reading at about a 12th grade level and I think much of that had to do with my mom allowing me to challenge myself in what I read... and simply allowing me to read.

OP, I think that book would be fine for a 12 year old, though she may have questions on some of the information provided. It deals heavily in theology, symbology, and history and she may not have been exposed to some of the information or ideas before. So I might suggest you read it or at least look up some of the information so you can be ready if she wants to talk about the book... or you can send her my way because I really like that stuff!

It some self-mutilation, self-torture by an albino monk. And Dan Brown has some, err, non-traditional beliefs about Christianity that may offend really religious people. It's a recurring theme of his. But, I thought it was one of the best books I've read.

If your DD suddenly gets into symbols and symbolology, you will know where it came from.

My ds read it when he was 13 and enjoyed it.
