It's disappointing that they asked for proof but still denied her a ride. Again that pier design is a major problem. People should not be forced to do that death march if there are trams available. Either get more trams or come up with a better solution.

I would talk to DCL Guest Services, if you're still onboard, or write them a polite email or letter letter if you're home now, reporting this issue. I suspect that the CMs, not being medically trained, don't know that exertion can have a serious effect on blood sugar levels for Type 1 diabetics. DCL might need to modify their guidelines for use of the trams and the training they provide to those CMs.

Why would you need a tram for diabetes? Exercise is good for that health condition and she's young. My dh is type 1 and walks 4 miles every morning.

I think needs are individual and can vary from day to day, particularly when on vacation in a warm climate.

It's nice your dh is a great walker.

That's why you carry a piece of fruit or some sugar tabs with you at all times. It should't prevent you have exercising or doing normal activities.

That's why you learn how to manage it. I'm guessing she made the walk without incident. Aren't the golf carts for people that have mobility issues or can't actually walk a half a mile. I'm sure there is a good percentage of diabetics on any given cruise.

I thought they were restricting the trams to individuals with specific mobility disabilities. At least the morning trams to the island. Once the crowds are on-island I think access to the trams is more open.

that pier design is a major problem
I agree it's a major flaw in the planning. DCL was apparently completely taken off-guard by how many individuals would either not be able to prefer to conserve energy early in the day by avoiding the walk. They usually understand their customer better than that. The "any disability qualifies" position is quite a challenge, though, and ultimately ends up creating a negative experience for the disabled (in this case, long waits for trams and reduced time on the island). I understand the challenges with the reef and size of the pier and not wanting to tender -- and ultimately this was probably not the best location for DCL to choose.

Some Type 1 diabetics are fragile. I know that the CGMs have helped with this, but I wouldn't claim to know the capabilities of every individual.

I don't think they have enough trams to provide service to everyone that doesn't want to walk for 15 minutes.

Well, I don’t have diabetes and haven’t walked a mile in the shoes of anyone that has.

People struggle with different afflictions.

15 Disney cruises and first time to Lookout. My overall impression is that it’s very beautiful - but the overall layout is poor. To plan something like this without having systems in place to take care of folks is nonsensical.

I’ve asked the mods to delete the thread.

Thanks

People should not be forced to do that death march if there are trams available.

I've read multiple reports of it being a ~12 minute walk at a leisurely pace. Death march for a 12 minute walk?

Though, I don't think the crew had any business denying someone a tram ride especially after knowing a specific medical condition. Not all people with a given condition have the same symptoms or abilities.
