Date on digital photos

A question…

Is there a way to have the date the picture was taken to be printed on a printed picture?

Some background……I just recently purchased a Canon Digital Rebel XT. I had previously had a Canon EOS Rebel. My old rebel had a date stamp. When I had my pictures developed, the date was printed on the picture.

I had some photos from my new digital camera printed yesterday. There is a date on the back of the picture, but it is the date the photo was printed. I would like to see if there is a way the date the photo was taken to be printed on the picture. I know when I transfer the pictures from the compact flash card to my PC, the pictures are put into directories according to the date the picture was taken. I would just like some photos to have the date taken on the picture.

Is this possible?

you can ask the photofinisher to do it for you. It's done digitally... and yes, it can be done (by them) with a push of a button.

IMHO, those things ruins your picture. I hated and still hate those things with a vengeance.

I agree with Kelly. Why would you spend all that money to buy a nice, flexible camera system and take your time composing the perfect photograph and then mar it all up with a big, ugly date stamp? Depending on your composition it might even cover the best part of the photograph. At the very least it will draw attention away from the subject you are photographing.

I would suggest that when you get the prints back you look at the EXIF data that is stored with every photo you take and manually write the info you want to recall on the back of the photo yourself. Or go to your local office suppy store and get an adjustable rubber stamp for dates. I find it handy to be able to go back to a photograph that came out well and see what settings were used to capture it. That way it reinforces my memory to be able to reproduce the same effects in the same conditions later on.

I agree as well for what it's worth. That is what is so great about digital - all the info is right there!

PS Randy - I love the Pirate Mickey ears. I want a pair but DD said she won't walk with me if I wear them (hey now - the way she's been behaving - that's an idea!) I'll be wearing my Cinco de Mayo ears tonight!)

I like the idea of the rubber stamp.

I just like the idea of having a date somewhere on the picture - the back of it preferably - to give perspective on when it was taken.

I have read here that certain developers can add the date to the back of the photo. It is taken from the embedded data in every picture file.
Ask your developer.

That may be possible but it has been my experience that the printers don't always maintain the printer that prints data on the back. I have had many, many prints come back with info that was unreadable either due to smearing or the ink was too light. Maybe I just had a bunch of bad luck in this area.

I prefer to listen to long fingernails being scratched across a blackboard for hours to seeing the date on a photograph!

Why not try what I did when I was shooting film and keeping albums - I created an index sheet for each roll of film, with thumbnails and the dates and location that I took the photos.

I used Microsoft Publisher to create the index sheets, and made them the same size as the pages in my albums, so they fit right in.

And I didn't have to mar my prints with ugly date stamps.
