Date of point withdrawal for stay question

Hi! I am continuing to consider a DVC membership, and have an odd question. I am considering buying a membership at AKV, getting developer points. The points would expire (7 months after purchase) on the third day of a 7 day vacation I have planned.

Do all points get withdrawn on the day a vacation starts (so that expiration on the 3rd day would be fine because they'll be used by then)? or are they withdrawn on a daily basis (so that after the third day I'd have to use 2007 use year points because the developer points would have expired)?

Thanks in advance for any insight anyone might have.

I recently bought at AKV as a new member with an $8/pt incentive. Were you offered both the $8/pt and the developer points, or just the developer points? If the former, please let me know where/by who you were offered this. Thanks!

The incentive is an either/or not both.

To the OP... I would call your guide on that one. I could see it both ways. You used the points when you book so I would think you'd be ok BUT you could also argue that they are not really totally gone until they are gone, KWIM? I think I might want that one in black & white.

Good Luck!

Thanks - People keep telling me that, but everytime I see someone say that they're considering buying AKV for the dev points, I get to thinking I must be missing something. I'll stop asking now.

To the OP, why would you take the points and not the $?

People often want the developer points for an extended vacation this year. If that isn't the case, then they are better off with the $ savings.

The points may be used for any dates up until they expire. If they expire on February 28, they could not be used for any nights after that date regardless when the stay begins. In fact, you would not be able to even make the reservation for dates after the points expire - unless your guide can somehow extend the expiration of those points.

Good luck! :)

The incentive is definitely an OR - either you take the developer points or the $. In general, the $ is definitely the better offer - if you assume the worst case (using financing) and 10 years to save back the initial price of points, my calculations have it coming out about $1000 cheaper over 10 years.

However - in our case we want to take a very large extended family vacation shortly after the beginning of the use year which will take two years worth of points. If we get developer points we only need to use our 2007 use year + developer points, and have 2008 use year points available for use in 2009. If we take the $, however, we have to borrow all our points from the 2008 use year, and wouldn't be able to go on a DVC vacation until 2010. Assuming we'd nevertheless take an additional Disney vacation in 2009, and would pay more than $1000 cash for the rooms, then in our situation the developer points are better.

(there's also an additional benefit, which is that if we're just below having enough points for the large 2008 vacation we can top-up by borrowing a few from the 2008 use year).

From what you wrote you have not purchased yet. Are you referring the deadline to purchase with DP, I think June 4th, and then going forward from there? if so your guide could put the sale through on a later date and hold the promotion I am fairly sure they will not break a the deal for this reason. My guide would hold promotions as he only worked weekends so it can be done. Second if this is not the case and you are referring to now have your guide put through the sale on the apropriate date.

Just thought I'd post an update to this in case someone else had the same question. It turned out that points are withdrawn on the day they're used for - so any nights after the expiration of the developer points would not have been supported by those points.

We explained to our guide that the reservation was crucial to our purchase of the points, and she was nice enough to get them extended a few days beyond the seven-month period. (Her manager had to call to get the extended expiration added to our membership number). This led to its own problem however - it turns out that all developer points are SSR points. This means that if you bought at AKV (as we did) and wanted to reserve rooms at AKV (as we did) you couldn't book more than 7 months ahead! Since our reservation dates were a few days after seven months, we ended up having to complete our reservations day by day! Luckily we got them all.......

Thanks for everyone's help - we just returned the signed documents and are very excited!!!
