For the second time, dd has managed to damage the power socket on a laptop, rendering it unchargeable. The first time we bought a dock from eBay which solved the problem (the laptop was one we'd bought when she started Uni and it was fairly decrepit). This time it's her sister's laptop which we only bought for her in January, so we want to get it repaired. Is that possible?

Is it where the jack goes in or the power cable itself? DD has had to have hers repaired twice in the last 2 years where the jack goes in. Is it insured? Beccie has got hers insured

Debbie,
Same kid, different laptop? Whether or not you can get the computer fixed, you might want to consider some work being done on the kid.

I would say it could be fixed in the right hands.
When I was a IT support team leader I NEVER encouraged my staff to take laptops apart and I would never encourage you to do the same, I would always insist they returned to supplier for a fix. Laptops are risky to fix.
I know it been damaged but as you say it's fairly new, is the laptop still under warranty? You may get away with a call out :rolleyes1
If not, although I can't stand PC World you may get some advice from them or a local reputable computer hardware repair shop if you show it to them.
What damage is done? Has the power socket pushed in?

Our Toshiba laptop is away for the second time in two years for the charger lead too!!

It was a fairly cheap one from pc world but as the kids would be using it mainly for homework (and youtube!) I took out the coverplan.

Last time we thought it was something internal but they cleaned it up and gave us a new lead. This time they tried to tell me it was the battery over the phone which is a consumable and not covered by the insurance. So I tried to use it without the battery with the lead only connected, and it still switched off. The lead connector feels very loose in the socket.

Hope you get yours sorted!

Lynn

Deb, I don't want to promise anything but I could ask Gary if there's any way he could fix it for you (if it can be fixed).
