In regards to shipping from USA to Canada:
If your package is shipped to you by UPS, you will have to pay for brokerage, taxes and duty before you even receive the package. UPS will not release it to you until you pay for the fees they charge. You have no choice.
FedEx does it differently, they will deliver the package to you and than you receive a bill in the mail weeks later from FedEx Global Solutions telling you how much you owe. You can get out of it somewhat if you have somewhere near you to pay the GST yourself, but it takes a few phone calls and speaking to the right people to get them to back down.
I have received a GPS from the US and FedEx sent me the bill six weeks later. I managed to get them to allow me to go to Hamilton and pay the GST, and they waived the rest of the fees. They wanted $80 for tax, duty and brokerage on the GPS! OUCH!
There are class action lawsuits right now in Canada because of all of this. No wonder companies in the USA won't ship to Canada!
Also, USPS is sometimes okay, depends on what you order and it may or may not get charged. I have received 4 shipments of coffee from Iowa by USPS, and never got dinged once! *crossing fingers*. So if you order from the USA, you take your chances.. If you can have it shipped by USPS, your odds are better than with UPS or FedEx!
