D23 Membership $50.00 Shipping??

I will probably pay $24 for shipping the for the first year and then see

We just received our D23 magazine. I thought that it was a very nice magazine. Was packaged very well, should not be damamged in the mail. We signed up after they reduced the shipping to $25 (forget exact $ amount). We then received an email for select D23 members for a $25 gift card, so that covers our shipping costs. We are very happy that we got it. The only thing that we are dissappointed in is that we had to put it in someone's name versus our familys last name.

I guess I'm wondering where the value is in D23...

When I saw and read the email announcements, I immediately deleted the messages with a "why bother" attitude. Especially given the shipping (even $25 is outrageous to me). Now I'm hearing people say the magazine is "incredible", as is the "boutique".

I'm still not really seeing any benefit to joining - so perhaps those that paid and have received can comment?

First off we love all things Disney so we may be a bit biased. Anyway the magazine is awesome a definite collectors item we are even considering a second membership so we can have a set we don’t even open. We received or first magazine along with a nice membership certificate and a very nice lithograph. Also I would say that joining now and getting the first ever issue and trying it out for the first year is worth it. Also you never know what kind of perks D23 members might get.
The magazine best selling points itself is beautiful pictures and Disney Adult content ranging from Disney history to photo shoots to recipes.

In regards to shipping from USA to Canada:

If your package is shipped to you by UPS, you will have to pay for brokerage, taxes and duty before you even receive the package. UPS will not release it to you until you pay for the fees they charge. You have no choice.

FedEx does it differently, they will deliver the package to you and than you receive a bill in the mail weeks later from FedEx Global Solutions telling you how much you owe. You can get out of it somewhat if you have somewhere near you to pay the GST yourself, but it takes a few phone calls and speaking to the right people to get them to back down.

I have received a GPS from the US and FedEx sent me the bill six weeks later. I managed to get them to allow me to go to Hamilton and pay the GST, and they waived the rest of the fees. They wanted $80 for tax, duty and brokerage on the GPS! OUCH!

There are class action lawsuits right now in Canada because of all of this. No wonder companies in the USA won't ship to Canada!

Also, USPS is sometimes okay, depends on what you order and it may or may not get charged. I have received 4 shipments of coffee from Iowa by USPS, and never got dinged once! *crossing fingers*. So if you order from the USA, you take your chances.. If you can have it shipped by USPS, your odds are better than with UPS or FedEx!
