D-Day Invasion- "Strange"-ly Imminent!! TRIP REPORT IS UP!!

I'm excited for you!! As Magdalene knows, I've always wanted to visit Germany - my Mom and Dad lived there for a year, she has wonderful pictures and memories that she speaks about pretty often. She cried when she left, and would have much rather stayed there for life. So I like to think I was almost a true German. ;)

The hotel with 12 rooms sounds very interesting!!!

I look forward to all your pictures and your mini-TR. :goodvibes

(and Magdalene is a lovely person to meet! We had a brief meet last year in DHS!)

Okay, at the risk of being told I'm dragging this thread back into the gutter.......:scared1:I know what you mean.

There's a good man.

That's exactly why I take so many pictures of the princesses every trip! :rolleyes1

Well, they ARE very photogenic!

And here I thought it was because you LIKED us..... :sad1:

I do, I do!! And it's the right thing to do. :goodvibes

But boy when you throw THAT into the equation....... :dance3:

Considering I have about 1 drink a quarter.... there's little to worry about.

Yes, I also try to get lots of pictures of the maracas each trip too. ;)

First it's tray tables, now it's MARACAS??

It's like driving by a wreck........you don't WANT to look........

But ya just have to... :3dglasses

Wow, German lessons and photography lessons!!! There're just no end to the benefits of subscribing to this thread........ :worship:

It's a varitible smorgasbord of great stuff!

I'm so excited for your trip to Germany. So much fun. I love all the pictures, so beautiful.

And you know my TR will be in the forefront of my mind the whole time!! Light fixtures comin' up for you, Lady!! :thumbsup2

Wow, great pictures (you sure that first one isn't from the World Showcase? ) and sounds like a wonderful tour! Can't wait to read all about it! (and see the paintings;) ) I need to put this on my long-term list of must-do's! :thumbsup2 That little inn sounds like a fantastic place to stay!

I"m sure Durer will deliver the goods!! And I might even PHOTOGRAPH some of them! :lmao: Doesn't that inn sound quintessentially Bavarian?? (see Magedelene? This IS how Americans DO view Europe! ;))

Our employee website does a quote of the day and today's made me think of you and your history pictures. ;)

"History is a gallery of pictures in which there are few originals and many copies." - Alexis de Tocqueville

Oh, very poignant!! I like that one!! I can't wait to see some OLD history!!

Here is an idea... bring toothpicks! I can see the artistry now!

I could just take some extra straws from Casey's and use those. :confused3

My parents have a huge picture of St. Lorenze Church hanging in their living room. I think it is 24 X 30... or something like that. It is a beautiful church.

Man, your Germany touring sounds crazier than your WDW touring! :lmao::lmao:

REALLY!!?? That's amazing! I wonder why they would have chosen that??

It IS a packed schedule, but I think doable. As long as DH doesn't start to feel rushed, we'll be fine. I'm a "see as much as I can type" tourist- HE is a " let's linger and savor one at a time" type tourist. And that's why we can't do Disney together!! It just wouldn't work!

Oh my gosh, those pictures are gorgeous! Liesa, you are going on one of my dream trips - hope you'll have time for lots of pics and, oh, please, some of the inside of the hotel!! Charming would be a gross understatement. Like you, my only visit to Germany thus far has been connections in Frankfurt and I long to see more (hoping for a visit to Germany & Austria in 2012, but we'll see).

I am so excited for you guys!!!!! :yay:

I really hope you will get to take hold of this dream someday, Christine!! It's something we've wanted to do for over 10 years, so I know what waiting is like. Keep working towards it! 2012- It CAN HAPPEN!!

I will take pix of the hotel, the ones online look so cozy! Very European with duvet covers even! By the way, sometime, if you ever have another layover (I'd say for more than 7 hours minimum) it's VERY easy to go into the old city and poke around! We LOVED IT!!

Liessa that plan sounds wonderful!!! I hope everything works out exactly as you have planned it !!!

I do too! If we miss that train, there ARE others, but we may have to pay extra.

Your trip to Germany sounds like a lot of fun. Can't wait to see your pictures.

I'll be sure to take a lot of them!! ;)

Ok, fireworks are an absolutely different class of pictures: I think you only can get good pictures if you have a camera where you can set the shutter speed. If the shutter is open for too long, the pics have to be blurry. :confused3

this little one does have "fireworks" setting and that did help some, but not enough to get them to DISPosting worthiness.

While I feel like I have at least some qualifications for German (considering it is my mother tongue), these are merely amateurish tips - not to be confused with lessons! (Just a legal disclaimer!) ;)

Works for me. I"ve learned the meanings of fahrt (I know I'm screwing up the spellings already), rippe, and rotkohl. Very handy words indeed!

A DISMeet!! :cool1::cool1::cool1: How exciting! I wonder whom you will meet there! ;)

:rolleyes1:rolleyes::rolleyes1

While there is more to do, I think you have enough time to get a really good overview of the sights!

I think it's just the right amount of linger and keep moving. A good compromise for our family. See above response to Tim.

I am sure you will find that everything works out fine! Just remember the "Butterkuchen" is mainly sold on the ICE train, the bakeries at the airport might not have it. And it is pronounced as this: an "u" in German is always a sound like "oo" in English. And the "ch" is a strange sound which English speakers but you might have encountered it in Blankistani. The international phonetic alphabet sign for it is "x" (not to be confused with "x" in German or English, were it both sounds like "ks"...). Actually German pronounciation is really easy since "we write it like we say it" - no silent Ks, Ws or Ps and not nearly as many homonyms.

OK, on the train. Maybe it's just best to wait til we get on, but then again, I REALLY want a repeat of the cherry almond danish I had last time!! It was out of this world!

We DO have the KH sound (sometimes written Q in English). It's a back of the throat sort of k. Easy for us.

I just hope that the train will meet your expectations. Over the last days there were some horror stories about trains where the A/C did not work.... :scared1:

We'll be used to no A/C by then (as I sit here in my personal pool of sweat). :rolleyes1:guilty:

This is the menu of the "sister restaurant" to give you an idea of the offerings: http://die-nuernberger-bratwurst.de/uploads/media/English_2008.pdf However, be aware that you will have to pay for whatever you take from the bread on the table (per bread roll/pretzel about 0,50 €).

Ooooh, good to know!! We are used to paying a la carte per item, they do that here too. But, without being forewarned, I do get cranky when it happens.

There are public toilets in Germany!! And you are right, is generally frowned upon when kids pee on the sidewalk. :scared1: Why would people have their kid on the track for that??? At least send them off to the dust next to the track... :sad2:

They really don't see a difference. I guess they figure it will be dry in 4 minutes, so why not just there. Whatever, there are parts of every culture that are just vulgar or rude to at least someone.

But you might not even find many sidewalks - most of the walk through the city will be in the car-free pedestrian city center! :yay:

Now, THAT I like!! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I did not know that it was that small! This sounds really great. :goodvibes

Isn't it nice!? I didn't know that either until I was looking at the site again this afternoon.

Ok, this view is from the city wall not from your hotel! But you ought to consider to explore the city wall, you can walk along quite a bit on the top of the wall (in a covered gallery, so you don't have to be afraid of kids falling down).

I think I figured that, but included it because I picture "our" neighborhood looking like this- as in this might be something we'd see very near our hotel. Am I right??

Maybe we should make sure to include some of this on our little walk after the Toy Museum on our way down to the River and Wine Depot??

Nuremberg has been known for his toy industry since the medieval times. Do you know Playmobil in the US? This is produced in the Nuremberg area. And there is the world largest toy fair every year in February.

My DH played with playmobile for years during his childhood and my in-laws kept the sets for all the grandkids- so even my own kids got to play with them before we moved!

I guess I would have loved this to have been a Christmas visit, but ah well, we'll be happy with this time of year too. I know the Christmas Market would have been VERY cool!

Germans tent to be proud of their punctuality... So your guess ought to be head on!

If you think of the States as being 234 years old now (since the declaration of independence in 1776, I know that there were buildings built before that), you will find buildings three times as old. The other big church, St Sebald, was built in the 13th century. And other buildings in Germany are even older - Nuremberg is a rather "young" city. ;)

That's just so incredible to me!! It's hard for us to imagine anything older than say 100 years old, really.

I'll do my best to come up with recommendations! Red cabbage is called either "Rotkohl" (in Northern Germany) or "Blaukraut" (in Bavaria).

ok, need to use blaukraut. I can do that.

Wow, you really spotted something there! Those buildings are just a bit older than the WS! The Craft Yard was built for a big celebration and while the yard itself is historic, those houses were built in the 70's - so they are fake. But still it is a very quaint little place and has some unique shops. :goodvibes

We're very good at pretending- and probably might not have even noticed a difference. :rotfl2: Unique is what we're after...

ME????

Other than an unnatural obsession with Captain Jack Sparrow, I'm not sure what qualifies me for this status, but I thank you most highly! :worship:

You ARE TK! Well, and your panache, flair, and presence. ;)

Well, with my pregnancy brain and your admitted loss of function after the birth of each of your kids, that's for dang sure! :lmao:

:rotfl2: It's happening to you too, eh?

Do you remember when he was named on of People Magazine's 50 most beautiful people? He was on the cover wearing this pristine white robe, and it was a this gorgeous photo of him.

:cloud9:

I DO remember that! I was smitten, and that's for sure.

I've never been to Germany, but I know my sister adores it, and I can actually recognize some of the places you'll be going because of her telling me, and some of her photographs.

I hope you have a great time! :goodvibes

Thanks, TK! I'm sure it will be a lovely time with lots of great memories!

I'm excited for you!! As Magdalene knows, I've always wanted to visit Germany - my Mom and Dad lived there for a year, she has wonderful pictures and memories that she speaks about pretty often. She cried when she left, and would have much rather stayed there for life. So I like to think I was almost a true German. ;)

(and Magdalene is a lovely person to meet! We had a brief meet last year in DHS!)

I really hope you get to go someday! Wouldn't it be great to go and meet Magdelene on her home turf???

Meantime, I can deliver a TR to bring it to you. :)

I already know she's lovely to talk to on the phone. It'll be 100 times better in person, I'm sure! :thumbsup2

I think you're right!! On my birthday, (remember that??) there were fireworks for VE Day, and I played around with my settings some. I ended up with a few ok ones, but not anything like Melissa or Rebecca can get with their rigs. Maybe in my distant future I can get something that weighs more than 3ounces. :confused3

Your fireworks photos were pretty good. At least you can see the fireworks, unlike being a blur

Great advice!! I really want to focus in on the details. Big shots are fun and all, but they seem to really lose something in the "bigness". I came across a TR not long ago, where this amazing photographer really did just that. Details. Like a bin of do-dads in a shop, or just one sign on a restaurant, or the texture of the castle. But, it will take more time. Can't do that rushing around.

I'm sure, there will be MANY of the DISMEET!! They'll probably end up being the best of the lot. ;)

Magdalene did a great job capturing the little details in AK when she was on the Wild by Design Tour. It really gives you a different perspective and shows what a lot of people might miss while (like you said) they're sprinting to a ride, such as Space Mountain. Sometimes it's nice to slow down and remember the small details.

As for the DC MEET if I get this job, I will not be able to take the Monday off. Bubba and I will probably fly down and stay as late as we can on the 29th before we have to leave for the airport. Just a head's up!

Hey lady don't be showing off your maracas, this is a family park!!!:rotfl:

:lmao::lmao::lmao: Jordan recently pretended to have a nice set.

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

I figured out some tricks on how to get acceptable night (or at least low natural light) shots with a point and shoot:

1) switch off the flash!! (I guess you will have figured out that one already, but I am always amazed at how many people use their flash)

2) if your camera can change the ISO setting, fix it at something not too high. My camera can do ISO 1000, but the picture is then very grainy and has strange colors in it, I find putting it on ISO 200 makes much nicer pictures - but this might vary from camera to camera.

3) don't use the normal release, but the " delayed-action shutter release" or "self-timer" (these are the terms my dictionary comes up with:confused3 I hope you understand what it is supposed to be). My camera has a setting where you can choose a 10 seconds or 2 seconds delay. While the 10 seconds are great for pictures you want to be on for yourself, for those night time shots I use the 2 seconds delay.

4) and this is the most important: try to put your camera on a non-moving object. If none is available, try to lean yourself against something while holding the camera or hold the camara against something. And always hold the camera with both hands and keep your arms really close to your body.

I have tried several of those things you mentioned. A steady hand/surface is always helpful. I always laugh at people who keep the flash on. It illuminates everything in the foreground (i.e. people's heads) and darkens anything in the background. I've played around with the ISO, almost too much as my photos turned out pretty grainy once. And sometimes I'd forget to switch it back during daytime shots and the pictures just looked dirty  After lots of playing around with the manual settings, I just switched it back to automatic but turned the flash off. It works well enough I guess. I never knew about the delay option though. I'll have to see if my camera has that. I'll have to see if I can dig up some "Jen's Worst Nighttime Shots" tonight when I get home.

Hello everyone! :)

Wow...this thread is MOVING! And taking a few dips along the way. ;)

TK - you are definitely DIS famous! :) And for a while I was convinced that you were some famous author or something because you don't like putting your picture on here. :cool2:

I think you guys are going to have a WONDERFUL time in Germany! I so wish I could come! I took German two years in high school and it woudl be so neat to really get to experience the language first hand and visit the country!

Hello everyone! :)

Hi, Maroo! :wave2:

TK - you are definitely DIS famous! :) And for a while I was convinced that you were some famous author or something because you don't like putting your picture on here. :cool2:

Oh, sheesh.

Well, not yet anyway. I do have 16 weeks of FMLA, so I could start a book. LOL

Our flight leaves at 3:30 AM from The Big City, and arrives in Frankfurt am Main at 6:30 AM.

Ick. Sounds like an early morning for you

The Toy Museum- which is described like this:

Appealing to all ages, the Nuremberg Toy Museum, otherwise known as the Spielzeugmuseum, is bursting with toys spanning the past 70 years. Ranging from Lego models and tin cars, to Barbie dolls and modern computer toys, there is something for everyone here. You are able to play with some of the museum's toys and games, which is often the main highlight for children.

This sounds amazing!!! A toy museum?!? Who could resist that?!?

Leisurely, since that is the name of the game, we’ll stroll around enjoying sights we NEVER get to see in the US. Half timbered facades, cobblestone streets, flowers in window boxes, and old- old everything. America just doesn’t know old. Some of the places in Europe are twice as old as the States themselves!

Canada doesn't know old either. That's why I love Europe. There's so much history (well, as much that was left from the World Wars) but it's incredible to see buildings that are over 200 years old - and still standing!

I wish I could join you on the excursion to Germany. Bubba spent a summer there in 2006 for school and absolutely loved it. Now I want to go. Maybe next year we could do that. I'm really excited for you! When are you arriving there?

Well, I had responses to everyone all typed out, and my internet crapped out...

Take 2:

Oooo...not only do I have panache and flair, but presence?

Mom would be so proud! ;)

Your mom IS proud!!

Your fireworks photos were pretty good. At least you can see the fireworks, unlike being a blur

I'll have to see if I can dig up some "Jen's...

I'm sure I'll have a nice collection of crappy firework photos to bring home to add to my lineup! And if you post some of yours, then we'll all feel better about ours.

OK, just stay as long as you can! We all know that work comes before play :)
We'll just have to have as much fun as we can while you ARE there!:dance3:

Thanks for mentioning Flossbolna's Wild by Design post!! I just wanted to say how much I love and appreciate the time and effort DISers take in writing up good reports for us all to read- especially the ones with lots of detail and that are written well. THANKS EVERYONE!!!

You never know WHERE a PTR thread is going to go!!:dance3:

Maybe she really is famous! :confused3 She DOES have panache. And her mom IS proud.

I KNOW we're going to have a great time in Germany! and I wish you could be there too, maroo! Hey, that rhymes- I think it's time for some more rhyming on here.

If you came, you could help us order at restaurants, and maybe help us keep from ordering haggus and brains.

Well, not yet anyway. I do have 16 weeks of FMLA, so I could start a book. LOL

I think not! With 2 little ones, you may not even have time to get to the bathroom when you need to. Ask me how I know...

This is a vacation right here. The rest is gravy. I can't wait until you post about your visit to Germany.

You got that right, Glenn! You know a quality vacation when you see one. I don't think I'll have ANY posts about my trip until AFTER WDW, BUT I'm hoping that Magdelene will post a sneak preview while I"m still traveling!! :confused3

Flights ALWAYS leave in the early AM. It's so odd!! Sometimes it makes for some tired, crabby kids (and parents!). I really hope (seriously praying actually) that we can ALL sleep on the plane and be ready to rock and roll when we land! We'll need every ounce of energy we've got!

I never get tired of old churches, and pretty architecture. I took a mega-European tour in HS, and only got to see Koln in Germany! I'm ready for more!

OOOPS!! I totally forgot to add my dates!! DOY!

August 17-19th!!

I miss a day & 20 pages go by. Holy heck Batman! Let's see if I can contribute without going back 15 pages to pull quotes.

Everybody is talking about how hot they are. At 8:30 this am, weather.com said it was 84 degrees, but felt like 104. Fabulous. I'm afraid to see what it might be now.

You get to go to Germany. Lots of people have been to Germany, are planning to go there, or actually live there. My husband has been there. One of my friends is going to be stationed there come January. I am officially jealous.

I too enjoy taking pictures of interesting things, such as hats. Disney has such fun hats. For everyone's laughing pleasure, (and because I don't have my OWN TR :sad1:)here are the "hat pictures" from our first ever WDW trip way back in 1998(please excuse the really bad quality from scanning):

Thanks for all the FUN hat pix everyone!! I'll be back later today for responses... Trying to get some things done this AM. :goodvibes

After sleeping in the cozy little Elch hotel, and eating pastries that we’ll have gotten the day before, (yes, we know how to do vacation right.), our family will set out for the piece de resistance of the trip- the CASTLE or “Kaiserburg” sitting on a knoll overlooking the city!! Cinderella and Snow White may have theirs, and that’s all well and good, but this is the REAL DEAL!

nuremberg-castle-small.jpg

We are told that as far as European castles go, this one is on the less spectacular side, with few furnishings, and only one tower; but it’s old, it’s grand, and it’s in the city we’re visiting. After taking our time seeing what there is to see, taking special care to check out the deep well and climb the tower, we’ll head down to see another church: St. Sebald’s Church.

In the same area as the church are The Beautiful Fountain, (indeed that’s its name) and the Hauptmarkt- which means Central Market. Apparently, this is our second shot at souvenir shopping- I think a carved wooden Santa might be a fun catch. See the intricate iron work around the Fountain?? It’s old- as in 1587 old. And if you think that’s old, the fountain itself was constructed in 1396. Columbus hadn’t even sailed the ocean blue yet.

BeautifulFountain.jpg

I’m sure lunch won’t be too hard to find, any place will do, as long as it’s on the way to the Albrecht Durer House. Even if you’ve never heard of him, chances are you HAVE seen his works. I think this:

DurerRabbit.jpg

may be one of his most famous pieces.

The Durer House, is less a museum of his works, although I’m sure we’ll see at least some, but rather more of a museum of how a Bavarian artisan might have LIVED during his time. The kitchen and artist’s studio itself are set up exactly as they might have been while he was working and living there, and an audio tour is provided by his “wife” as she shows you around her house and kitchen. Cool, huh?

DurerHouse.jpg

At 3:30, we have a very special something lined up! Can you guess WHO we’ll be getting to MEET UP WITH?!? Why yes, the DYNAMIC DUO of Flossbolna and nodnol!!! 2 of the loveliest ladies on the DIS! In real life they are Magdelene with an “e”, and Katharina, and you can find their most recent, incredibly detailed and well-written TR

HERE

Who.jpg

We have a great lineup planned with them, starting with a tour of the underground tunnels of Nuremberg! They have been used for a myriad of purposes over the years, including wine casements and bomb shelters during air raids. I think this may be one of the neatest things on our entire agenda. The tours MIGHT only be given in German, so Magdelene has graciously agreed to translate for us.

Underground.jpg

After our tour of damp and eerie places, we’ll all head out to dinner at a place she’s already scoped out for us. She assures us that it’s great German food- I’ll have to take notes and compare it to the Biergarten. LOL! You might think that that might be the end of our time together- NOT EVEN CLOSE. We ladies will head out for some surprise fun after the kids and my DH are sent on. What they will do, I frankly have no idea. I suspect they may go back to the hotel and hit the sack. But the ladies have other ideas- and for that you’ll have to hang onto your hats. What kinds of trouble can 3 DISisters cook up???

The next day we’ll have to be at the train station by 11:00, so really no time to do much except, pack up, and hit the road. We are thinking of taking either a taxi or public transport back to the station and MAYBE hitting up the Crafts Yard one last time for some last minute shopping. But they don’t open until 10:00. Quite possibly that is too little time to really do much except walk through it. Back to the airport for one more plane in our long string of them. Onward to Bowling Green, and good bye to Bavarian bliss.

Wow, this will be quite a tour! I enjoy touring the old, historic places and seeing the architectures, and that's in the NEW country. So jealous of all the things you will see, and places you will visit! I can't wait to see pictures of that fountain. Even from a distance it looks amazing!

That must be one OLD woman! This part of your tour is right up there with getting to walk through Mickey's Country House itself and see how the historic really lived!

The underground tunnels of Nuremberg may have survived the bombs of WWII, but I have a feeling they may never be the same after a visit from Liesa (with an "e"), Magdelene (with an "e") and Katharina (without any "e's" at all). Make sure you don't get too wild together! You do have a plane to catch the next day so you can make another very important DISmeet!

Have a great and very safe trip!

Am I being stereotyped again? Or are you just psychic??? :)

Yeah, that musty old smell can be irritating sometimes. No wait, you didn't say pungent did you??? :rotfl:

Nope, no stereotyping necessary- everyone on this thread just seems nice.

You should go back and find the story of my DH and dad taking FOREVER to come out of the Marakesh Restaurant. Apparently, they rather enjoyed the entertainment. :confused3

Actually, in truth vodka IS almost as cheap as bread. In ALL stores the selection of vodka is as extensive as the selection of caviars. I do live near the prime harvesting grounds for fish eggs, you know. ;) Seriously, the alcoholism rate is over 75%; it's a very sad problem here... with far reaching effects in the family and beyond.

I think the old smell will show up in the casements- I'll bet it will remind me of PoTC... :cloud9:

I miss a day & 20 pages go by. Holy heck Batman! Let's see if I can contribute without going back 15 pages to pull quotes.

It moves fast, that's for sure!! Lots of yackers (mostly me) around here! YOu're doing great by just commenting on where you are! ;)

Everybody is talking about how hot they are. At 8:30 this am, weather.com said it was 84 degrees, but felt like 104. Fabulous. I'm afraid to see what it might be now.

I don't think it ever got BELOW 84 last night here! It's been over 100 every day for 2 weeks! I am seriously looking forward to a place that I can at least find cool water to go into when it does get hot! I suppose we COULD go to the river if we wanted, but the cows, camels, and horses wade around in it too, and doo other things as well, I"m sure.

You get to go to Germany. Lots of people have been to Germany, are planning to go there, or actually live there. My husband has been there. One of my friends is going to be stationed there come January. I am officially jealous.

I'll just have to make sure I take lots of pictures and take you on a virtual trip with me when I get back! Speaking of which: hey have you thought more about coming to our DIS MEET in DC?? :confused3

I too enjoy taking pictures of interesting things, such as hats. Disney has such fun hats. For everyone's laughing pleasure, (and because I don't have my OWN TR :sad1:)here are the "hat pictures" from our first ever WDW trip way back in 1998(please excuse the really bad quality from scanning

Is there really no way to make these things smaller???

LOTS of photos of hats!! THANKS!! I have only a couple- Norway, Mexico and China- and only on my kids. I need to fix that!! And by the way, you are always welcome to post pictures!! :thumbsup2

If you're using photobucket, you can choose an option of upload size. It takes some hunting though, if I recall.

Very cute Hat Pix !!!

I also know what "fahrt" means .... Jordan does it a lot !!!!So does DJay!!!!:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

I've heard about that!! It really means "ride", "run", "drive". And I"m sure both do a lot of that too. :rolleyes1
