Kristy,
We just returned from CP (not the Grand Villas) on Sunday. We stayed for a week in a 3 bedroom unit. I also read the mixed reviews before I went and all I can say is "What do these people have to complain about???". I don't understand how people's standards can be so high as to not be happy with this place. First of all, the location is the best. You are one stoplight away from the entrance to Disney property leading to DTD. There are numerous restaurants within walking distance. You can even walk to the Winn-Dixie on the back side of the property. Medical/Dental clinic across the road if needed, Hospital around the corner. We went to Universal this trip and the drive was so easy, out the back gate of the resort and up Turkey Lake Road, very few lights, right to Universal Parking. BTW gas is cheaper on this route at the corner of Sand Lake Road. If you like to spend your holiday shopping (not me) you are close to outlet malls as well.
As for the resort itself. Our suite was huge. Check out the room layouts on their website. However, if you are booked into a one bedroom, I would have to say that this is mostly just a hotel room with bath, no kitchen/laundry facilities. The biggest complaint is that the bathrooms are open concept to the bedrooms. The toilet is tucked around the corner out of sight however but does not have a door to close it in. We did not find this a problem. We had 3 baths and the one off the hallway had a door. The laundry was great to have, as well as the dishwasher. Big screen 42" TV in the livingroom, and 20" in each of the 2 master bedrooms. I loved to sit in the whirlpool tub in the evening and watch TV.
I found the facilities to be very clean and well cared for. Nothing out of place or broken in our suite. We were in Building 4 right next to the pool. The volcano pool is fun for the kids, and has 3 tube slides. Around the pool is the clubhouse w/exercise room, arcade and game room, with lounge area w/TV. The teens liked to hangout here in the evenings. Also at the pool is a tennis court, volleyball pit, basketball court & shuffleboard. They will supply equipment. Hot tub is very hot. Pool was comfortable for the time of year. They seemed to make it warmer as the weather got cooler.
They have organized activities such as Bball shootout, putt-putt competition, bingo, 8 ball tournament and those are just the ones we participated in. There is a small fee for some. Say "HI" to Charlie the parrot in the lobby.
We had a bit of spare time one morning and did the timeshare presentation. Had a very friendly retired guy named Jim, very low key, got $75 Disney for our effort.
I would HIGHLY recommend this place, but don't tell anyone
