Cutting the cord and so confused!

So... how do you have the set up for an attic mount antenna and a cable modem?

Currently we have cable coming into our house, going through the main splitter panel, and ending up in the outlets in each room. Do you just connect the modem to the line coming into the house and connect the antenna to the splitter panel?

I found an antenna on a clearance shelf in Target for under $15. It looks like a piece of square plastic and it's for inside the house. We got rid of cable last May and we don't miss it at all. We have netflix and amazon prime. We use amazon prime for the 2 day shipping. The tv shows/movies we can watch are just an added bonus. We tried Hulu for a week and hated it. We didn't like any of the shows on it. Our antenna works very well for local channels. We watch shows like NCIS and the Big Bang when they air. If for some reason we missed them, my husband hooks his laptop up to our tv and we watch it from their website the following day. You do not need to pay extra to do this on CBS. CBS lets you watch shows the following day right from their website. There are usually the past 4 or 5 episodes for each show on their website. There are a few commercials that you cannot skip. ABC requires you to have a cable provider to watch shows the next day. However, you can wait a week and then you can watch it on their website for free and without a cable provider. I do not know what NBC does because we do not watch any shows on that channel.

Before we cut cable, my husband and I made a list of the shows that we watch. Then we figured out how much we spent on cable a year. When we asked ourselves if we were willing to spend $1200+ to watch a couple of tv shows, we decided no!! That's a nice vacation somewhere for the 2 of us. Also, some shows that were "must watches" for either of us.... when it came down to watching it online, well, sometimes we felt it really just wasn't worth it. Who knew some of our "must watch" shows who end up being "who cares" shows! We were surprised.

Honestly, if we had kids still living in our house, I think it would be harder to cut the cord. If they were very little and never had cable, they'd be used to the whole streaming idea.

Wait, what? Out here in CA, they require you to pay $5.99 to watch any CBS shows online after they air (all-access pass.)

Are you sure? I can watch the last 5 episodes of everything without buying All Access.

We did this and spent $60 on an antenna that gets us 2 channels.
I spent $20 and I get 40 channels. 15 of them are Spanish language channels, but the rest are the local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and PBS affiliates as well as a few stations that I didn't know existed. I bought the antenna for the times when our cable goes out.

Are there any reasonable options for sports, other than the local stations through an antennae? That's pretty much all I watch.

gwtting appletv or roku or something similar will give you many sport app options

I live in the middle of nowhere and the fastest internet I can get is 12mb. Would a box with Kodi installed work for me?
With 12Mbps.... I don't think you will have reliable 1080 content. However with the showcase app... you can download the video on your slower connection and then watch it in full definition quality.

Before splurging money on that Kodi box.... why not try Kodi on your computer first? It does take a little effort looking at YouTube videos for the add-on configuration.

ugg, I hate watching tv on my laptop. it really prevents the whole family from watching at one time. even though that rarely happens, also I usually watch tv while doing something else. if I'm in the kitchen I'll cook and/or clean up and watch the news. hard to do that on the lap top. I only have a 13 inch screen
I would have gotten a larger 17" laptop or plug that 13" laptop into an external monitor.

I recently added a Yamaha 5.1 sound projector on my kitchen TV. With surround sound in the kitchen.... there's less need to compete with others in the main room.

I had Dish. I'd call every couple of months (when the latest promotion ended) and complain that it's too much money for what we watch. We are not a "Sports" family and I don't like paying for 12 ESPN/MLB (or whatever) channels. Add in all the "Christian" Channels that we don't watch (I go to my church and don't usually care to watch my church on TV), and the Home shopping channels... We end up only watching about 15 channels.

Unfortunately the 15 channels (or so) that we watch are spread across their packages, such that to get them we have to get the higher package.

So after many years of complaining and threatening to leave, I finally cut the cord. (The last 6 months was Top 200 for about $35.00/month for 4 receivers, no DVR, no Premium channels). They were going to jump my cost to $80/month (still discounted) and ultimately it was going up to over $100. I told them I wasn't willing to pay more than $40/month but the best they could do is get it down to just under $50.

So now, I am done. I have to pay another $20 to return their equipment, but I am okay with that. With Smart TV's, netflix account, Amazon Prime, Kodi and HD Antenna... I am good.

My HD Antenna gets a LOT of channels. I get ABC, CBS, NBS, PBS, Fox (with the local networks), many of which have -1, -2, -3 channels (eg, we have a local channel that is on 16 but it's 16-1. Plus they have 16-2 and 16-3 with additional programming). I get some Daystar (satellite) channels which seem to be mostly "Christian" channels, I even get QVC and HSN. Plus some others like Qubo, Comet, ION. All in all I get about 40 channels on the antenna.

I find that me personally, will watch even less TV, and that's not a bad thing. I get more work done. Even the kids aren't too upset (yet) but time will tell.

As a final note, I find it interesting, that this trend is going to get worse for the cable providers. Unless they start offering programming that people really want. I am not a sports person so I feel like I am getting screwed when I have to pay more (even top dollar) to have these channels that I don't watch. So ESPN is going to start (or continue) to struggle. http://www.teamspeedkills.com/2016/...indicates-espn-wont-like-a-cord-cutting-world
