On standard white or wheat bread.

Diagonally into triangles or across into rectangles?

My mother cut across into rectangles. I wanted triangles. It’s a well established fact that sandwiches cut into triangles taste better, especially if the bread is toasted.

On the rare occasion I eat a sandwich it’s toasted except peanut butter and jelly which I just fold the slice over. If I feel like cutting it then I usually do corner to corner especially if it’s grilled cheese.

Triangles, of course! I also used to argue with my mother about this. I thought they looked more appetizing, but Mom said there was no practical difference, and I was just putting on airs.

When I grew up I was vindicated, because working in a restaurant kitchen taught me that triangles are preferred because triangles leave more room for other foods on the plate, and if flipped on their edges to show off the contents (or served in bulk), they also hold their shape better, whilst square or rectangle-cut sandwiches tend to flop open if plated edge-up. Also, for crispy-grilled sandwiches, having a narrow point to start eating from makes it less likely you'll cut your gums on the crispy crust.

Using a Chef's knife begin with tip of knife at the upper left corner of bread, place palm of left hand in spine of knife and press down on handle with right hand rocking the knife downward until heel contacts hard surface then rotate bread 90 degrees and repeat resulting in 4 equally sized right triangle pieces of sandwich. One can then eat individual pieces OR stack and scarf down.

NOTE -- I am right handed, one can reverse cutting direction if left handed achieving similar results. :teeth:

Corner-to-corner into halves (like all normal people), but if you were coming over then it would be into 4 perfect triangles with the crusts precisely trimmed. :worship: Unless of course your advance-team instructed me to do something different.
