I haven't yet done a cruise that ends at as US port. Is customs right there at the port? Is it basically the same as you find at airports? I'm guessing that it adds a lot of time to the whole debarking process? I'm just curious. Thanks.

You will get a form at the end of the cruise. Fill it out and hand it over. Customs and whoever have to clear the ship and then you begin to debark. As long as you stay in limits for everyone, it should not be a big deal

What port are you asking about? Typically, when you debark, you will pick up your bags, and then line up for the Immigration/Customs check. Right there in the terminal. At least that's how it is in Port Canaveral.

San Diego we went through Immigration first, then down to get our bags.

We've found the lines at the cruise terminals are usually much shorter than at airports, because not everyone disembarks the ship at once. Airports often have more than one plane load of people trying to get through customs at the same time.

Normally found it fast, and unlike USA airports where it's OTT.

We have found customs through the terminal in US to be very fast and efficient. We don't, however, disembark early when there are the most crowds. We have late breakfast and then take our time getting off the ship at about 9 a.m. and the crowds are minimal.

Last year was the first time we flew back from a foreign country to a US airport and the customs and immigration lines were a nightmare -- three hours total to get through both.
