We have been to the World a tons of time but always driving. Planning on flying for our next trip in September, can you explain the customs process. We would leave from Montreal, do we have a custom when leaving Canada and then another one arriving in Orlando? DH doesn't speak much of english, would that be a problem? ;)

Hi Evelyne,

You will be given a Customs Form at boarding , or on the plane,

BUT Remember if you are carrying ANY FOOD of Any Kind OR SWEETS

MARK YES on the form.

.................

Any Drinks will not be allowed THROUGH Security at your Departure Airport

..........................

French will be no problem as you seem to speak English.

Departing Montreal going directly to the US, you clear U.S. customs at the Montreal airport. You check your bags and go through security first, then US Customs. There's a very good, detailed explanation of the entire process on the airport's website. You should arrive 3 hrs. before your flight to the U.S.

As to language issues, you approach the US Customs officer together, as a couple. You can deal with the officer together, so there shouldn't be any issues. Customs officers in Montreal encounter a number of French-speaking people.

Just to add...

On your return trip, you will be given the customs form on the plane to fill out (1 per family.) On it you will declare what you have bought in the States (including Alcohol, cigarettes, etc.) and will bring in to Canada (exemptions will vary depending on length of trip). When you arrive back in Montreal, you will go through Canadian customs.

On the way there, the US customs form is usually given to you to fill out before you start going through security which starts with US customs (at least in Toronto). And yes, even candy in the bags is considered food. daughter got in trouble because of that!
