We're scheduled for a 3 day cruise next summer, from Port Canaveral to Castaway Cay and back. Will we have to pay duties on merchandise purchased either on the ship or from Castaway Cay when we go through customs?

Thank you!
Just to clarify--on the ship there may be merchandise that is labeled "duty-free." That means merely that the merchant didn't pay duty, not that you won't have to. And if you're traveling as a family, you can combine allowances in most cases (minors can't have a "share" of alcohol or cigarettes).

and a lil tip .... things bought on the ship and at CC just might be reported to the folks at Customs .....

as a friend of mine discovered a lil while back.

They were called out by an officer and asked to complete a declaration ... which they did - under reporting - Mr Officer took a look and asked "would you like to check this again and maybe revise it?" They'd exceeded their combined allowance just with what they'd bought on the ship . . . but the form said they were under for their entire vacation/cruise .....

HINT HINT ...... if asked for a declaration and then asked 'are your sure' .....?

Mr said "no thank you" .... the couple soon found selves and luggage in a lil private room ...... :rolleyes1 with a few folks from Da Man . . .

Many folks will tell you they put on the form that they were 'over' and Mr Customs just said 'go ahead .... welcome home'. That didn't happen here :crutches: altho they did get off relatively easy as Customs could have seized everything not properly declared!

Same thing happened to us a few years ago. They said, "Are you sure?", we said yes. We were then escorted to a room by ourselves and left to sweat it out for about 30 minutes. They came back, asked if we wanted to reconsider how we filled out the form. We "amended" it and they let us be on our way. I was fine but my young daughters weren't so happy. However, my wife was relieved because she loved her new diamond necklace. Not my finest hour as a Dad.

Always declare. I have owed and paid duty a couple of times when I was over my limit (this was in airports), but never from a cruise when I was over. I am always honest on the form, and I keep an envelope with receipts.

If they catch you cheating, they can levy a fine AND keep your stuff. No bueno.

We've been over our limit of rum on a few occasions, but have always filled out the form truthfully. The fees really aren't worth the hassle - we were pleasantly surprised they were so low (to be fair we're just talking 2-3 extra bottles at a time).
