Customized Mouse Ears: MS or DTD?

We want to get some Mouse Ears for our young travel companion for our day at MK. We'd like to let her choose exactly what she wants.

The easiest thing would be to go to DTD on arrival day, that way she'll have her ears all day at MK (and we don't have to take time out of our touring to get them... could take a while!).

But, I'm concerned that there aren't very many options at the shop at DTD. And/or that it won't be as "magical".

Can anyone chime in with any experiences (or, better yet, photos of the DTD location??)?

Are you talking about the store where you could pick a base, then a set of ears and have them put together or just getting their name put on a pair of ears? Cause from what I understand they did away with the store where you pick out base/ears separately.

IMO, it would be far more "magical" to go to DTD the day you arrive and make a big production out of getting the ears and getting all "neat & pretty" before walking into MK the next day.

The last thing I'd want to do with a child is go into the MK with all that there is to do and see, and then tell them that they have to stop at a store, pick out ears and wait for them to be embroidered.

If you find you don't have enough choices at DTD, you can always change your mind and get them on Main Street. But remember that there's something to be said for not giving a child unlimited choices. You could end up spending half of your first day trying to figure out what kind of ears to buy.

Ah! You're right... looks like you can't build your own ears anymore... I guess I didn't notice that since I was on a mission to get the "original" ears for my DS.

Is it, then, safe to assume that you can get the same options at the Chapeau on MS and the little area (near Design-a-tee) at DTD?

And are these the only options now??

Seems like a LOT less to choose from!

I'm with you, 100%. I would hate to spend an hour of our Rope Drop morning with a toddler who can't choose between the sparkly Minnie or the sparkly Tinkerbell! ;)

But her mom (my SIL) went to the Chapeau back when they did the build-you-own ears... and I think she's hoping for that kind of experience... if there are far less options at DTD, she might be disappointed.

Then again, if there are the same (very limited, it seems) options at both locations, then DTD would be the place to go for sure. (And I like your idea of trying DTD with the idea that we could go to MS if DTD is a bust.)

Can anyone confirm that the options are the same at both locations?

From what I've read they do not have Create Your Own Ears anymore. I'm quite disappointed because we were planning on doing that in Dec. I'm still planning on buying our ear hats at DTD on our arrival day so I really hope the selection is good. From what I've read World of Disney is the only DTD option.

When I was there in May the store at DTD beside Design-a-Tee had a good size collection to choose from.

The DTD store was nice. Tons of hats to pick from. Several fonts to choose. Varying prices. They would even do nicknames if you want, which the store on Main Street in Disneyland wouldn't do. The store on Main Street, the operator did it by hand (this was several years ago). Now it goes in a really cool machine that automates it, but you get to watch it being made up close which is fun too. I would not want to be in a store for my first 1/2 hour at the MK -- Get them ahead of time at DTD.
