Custom Cheques (or Checks)

I was reading a thread on the US CB about custom personal cheques. You seem to be able to have all sort of designs on your cheques in the US - here's a website for example:

I know a few banks in the UK offer a very limited option on cheque designs, but I was wondering whether any banks in the UK allow you to use your own custom cheques like in the US?

Any bankers out there?

I get my checks from this company. They're a little pricey, mostly because I get the two-part checks. Here's my design. The checkout ladies always comment on them.

I don't see why your banks can't allow pretty checks. Ask them. Start a new trend.

I used to have really cool cheques when I lived in the States - of course, I had no money as I was a student, so I couldn't use them, but I had them!

I've never seen anything other than plain boring cheques in the UK - I think if you had fancy one's then even if they were legal, you would get loads of questions when you tried to use them.

I know a few years ago Natwest used to have a choice of pretty cheques (for a charge) - pastel wildlife drawings, so they are definately legal. I don't know if they still do them though.

It certainly would be good if you could get nicer looking cheques!

If you are a business customer you can have special cheques (just think about any you've received from big companies like British Telecom, etc - they have their corporate logos on them). Any business, whatever size, can do this although many of the smaller ones don't bother. The printer needs to be approved by the bank (presumably because the magnetic data along the bottom of the cheque needs to be in the correct format).

If you could find out who these specialist printers are, I don't see why you couldn't have personal cheques done, although presumably there would be copyright issues if you wanted to use anything other than your own design (Disney characters, for example).

I posted a link to checksununlimited back in the days of the old UK boards and suggested that some enterprising person set up such a company in the UK. I'm sure it would be a licence to print money! Pun intended.
