Curse of the Thunder Thighs

I have big thighs too. You'll probably never get them to the size that you want. We're all genetically predisposed to have a certain shape, and you just can't beat it. However, you may be able to get your thighs a bit smaller if you haven't been working out very intensely (and are ready to start, at least for a while). I have read that some people think that there are some fat cells that you can only burn by working out and not by dieting. And you do have to work out for a while before you start burning fat instead of energy stores that you already have. I wouldn't try to add much thigh work to your workout routine. That will just build muscles in your thighs. When your body burns fat for energy, it gets it from all over, not just the part being worked.

I HATE my thinghs!!! What is worse is when others (men) think that all our thighs are suppose to be the size they were when we were 2...before we ever had children..... you know the type of men I am talking about.

I also hate that they rub together when walking!!

Does anyone else have the problem of the waist being 2 sizes smaller than what it takes to get over the thighs? How do you buy pants?

Do you walk for your exercise? They say that's good for the lower body.

I'll copy this to the WISH board for you - WISH stands for We are Inspired to Stay Healthy, so that would be inclusive of exercise.

Good luck!

Are you talking about the outside of the thighs or that "stuff" that hangs right inside? I honestly dont think there is a way to get rid of that hanging "stuff"- you know right at the top of the leg right on the inside.
I was speaking to a friend the other day and we both decided no matter what size you get down to, it will always be there.

I walk over 21miles/week and I dont think it will ever go away. They honestly looking like hanging bags. The waist trims, stomach goes down, legs look much trimmer, but those bags remain.

its called elastic waist pants -- however they allow room for growth!

First off, sorry if this is posted to the wrong board...feel free to move if needed. Wasn't sure if I could ask on the Wish board.

Now to the point, I am trying desperately to reduce the size of my thighs. I have always had large thighs, even when I was a size 5. I am currently losing weight by eating right and working out, but I don't have anything that specifically works my thighs. Everything is taken care of but them. Anyone have any suggestions? Hoping to have them under control by mid July for my Disney trip.

Thanks in advance!

Wow, I feel better. It's good to know it's not just me. Right on the inside at the top of the thigh is exactly where I was referring to imgoingtodisney. I've been working out a little over 3 weeks now, usually once a day. I'm doing weight training and cardiovascular. I've started losing weight and toning up, but my thighs are my sad spot. Kermit, I thought maybe it had to do with genetics...that's what I'll tell everyone since I haven't had much of a change with my thighs in forever! jana, I try to walk a mile a day. Of course, the weather has been erratic lately, so I'm not quite making quota, but I'll try harder.

Thanks again; I feel much better!

I'm having the same problem. The other day I was trying on my new bathing suit. I turned around and was so shocked to see all that cottage cheese on the back of my thighs! I know I need to exercise, but I am so lazy. Years ago I used to run around a track and that would firm up my legs. But I'm older now so it's much harder to take care of.

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about!! I'm a size 4, and I still have big thighs and some saddlebags....it's absolutely genetic!!! I have the EXACT same thighs as my mom.....She's 55 years old and only weighs 128, so we definitely don't have weight issues in our family, but big thighs definitely run in the family and I can't get rid of them no matter how much exercise I do.....I'm 5'6 and weigh 119, and even when I weighed my lowest (109), I STILL had the big thighs!!

I have to go up a size because of my thighs. It is very frustrating, but I am continuing to work on them and hopefully get them down enough to go down a size in jeans. I have to buy what fits the thighs and the waist is just large and I use a belt or wear my shirts out. Good luck and PD to you!

Jana! Hi sweetie!

I haven't found any secret exercise for the thighs. Trainers keep telling me that I can't spot reduce, whatever that means.

I've got a good inner thigh tightening exercise - quite hard to describe but you can feel it really working and it doesn't bulk your thighs - I'll give it a go for you:

Lying on your side, rest on your forearm, bend yr knee and place the foot of your top leg on the floor just in front of you other knee,
Then whilst keeping the lower knee straight, raise lower leg up from the floor - repeat 10 times(slowly)m and then swap over - then when you get used to this, increase reps and add ankle weights.

Really pulls in the baggy bits!!!

Thanks, elisebutt! I'll try that tomorrow....I would try it now, but I just had my shower. Every little bit helps!

I haven't read the responses yet, just wanted to welcome you to WISH and say GOOD LUCK with getting those thighs in shape! ;)

I love power walking and rollerblading, and both those exercises really use the leg muscles! Also, squats and lunges are good toning exercises for the upper thigh/bum area! :)

Stick around! We'll do our best to keep you motivated!!!

Just wanted to say thanks again because I incorporated all the suggested exercises into my workout, and I am feeling the burn. It's so great to finally be working the muscles in my thighs...it gives me hope! I am feeling so great today! Well, off to take a walk!

Thanks again!

I'm going to try what was suggested here (kinda sounds like some pilates exercises also) and hopefully have some help on my thighs also!!!!

Does anyone else have the problem of the waist being 2 sizes smaller than what it takes to get over the thighs? How do you buy pants?
Yes, I was always that way even when I wore small sizes but it's even worse now that I've had 4 pregnancies, 3 children.... my hips are wider now! For awhile there my belly was stretched out and big after those last 2 pregnancies that I got really huge in the stomach with (had polyhydramnios- way too much fluids) but now that I'm losing weight I'm getting back to having a much smaller waist than my hips/thighs!
How do I buy my pants? Well I can't STAND pants that are loose in the waist- nor tight in the hips/butt/thigh area either. So I try on pants until I find the brand/pair that are smaller in the waist yet not tight everywhere else and then I CRAM my thigh/butt through the waist part.... wiggling, pulling each side little at a time if I have to (LOL) and then once I get them over my lower hip area- the biggest part- it's all smooth sailing from then on and they fit perfectly at waist and comfortably everywhere else. It's the only way I can stand to wear pants/jeans. If I get them with the WAIST fitting over my thighs/hips easily- then they end up way loose at the waist and I can't stand that! LOL

Oh and btw- those pants I was talking about? I usually have the best luck at Walmart. I know..... but the other brands seem to think if you have a waist that size (the size to fit my waist) that you must be straight as a pin and have no "womanly" hips/thighs and therefore they are tight as all get out on my hips/thighs because I DO have some wideness there! I'm not 9yrs old and straight as a board anymore. LOL So I have to wear mostly Walmart brand stuff- except shorts in other brands seem to fit better. Why the other name brands think if your waist is that small your hips/thighs must go straight down and not OUT even the tiniest bit is beyond me. LOL They need to get their heads on straight and get a clue that women do go wider at the hips for gosh sakes. LOL
