Current UY points purchasing direct

Just got off the phone with a guide about purchasing an October UY for Riviera. Guide asked a couple times about why we wanted that UY and explained why (plan to do most of our trips in late fall/early winter) and having oct 2020 and 2021 points in a month would be a perk too. Guide said they would have to ask management about it and would call me back. They called later and basically said due to Covid and inventory they don’t have any oct 2020 or dec 2020 points available. I then asked if they had oct UY for any resort available, and they said no. I kinda find it hard to believe that there’s no Oct UY available, especially for Riv. Even mentioned that there’s resale listings out there with banked points that I could get cheaper but was willing to pay the premium for direct because of ease/quickness of availability of points, but they didn’t budge. They were happy to offer February or April though.

Anyone else experiencing this? Based on what I’ve learned about purchasing direct, getting current UY points (and banking them even if they’re outside the window) is a pretty good benefit about buying direct, and something that made it worth it buying direct. Not sure if they’re genuinely out of points or perhaps reserving those points for other customers or bigger purchases, or selling those points at rack rate.

They can't sell what they do not have. I am not surprised that they don't have current use year points available for September, October or December. They have been using some of their points to provide availability for the extensions they granted many Members who lost points because of the Covid closure or because they aren't allowed to travel to the US. They've probably also used some of their unsold points to rent to the general public for cash.

To get current use year points after the banking deadline has passed, one needs to be lucky. DVD does not sit on unsold points hoping someone will buy late in the use year. They rent the rooms they represent for cash. They don't want points to expire before they can turn them into cash.

Sorry to hear that they have sold out their inventory for what you want. I don't think there is anything nefarious going on. You're just too late to get October 2020 points. If you still want to buy, you'll have to wait to buy until after October 2021.

I just checked and did not see any Oct resales for RIV either. It must be a very popular month for RIV.

Just kind of struck me as odd at first that there’s no Oct or Dec UY available for any resort. But all of what you said makes sense, didn’t know all that context as the guide didn’t go through explaining that anything beyond saying Covid (which unfortunately some companies seem to take advantage of using as an excuse for things these days) and inventory.

The way buying direct been described, particularly in all those direct vs. resale videos, podcasts, and other places on the internet, it makes it seem that buying direct is a seamless/customizable process, down to choosing your own use year, amount of points, and how those points can be broke down into several contracts. But I guess they can’t sell what they don’t have! Thanks for the explanation!

In April I purchased more VGF points direct. I have and wanted a September UY. They said they only had a few points and would get back to me. This was at a meeting with my guide going over all of the purchasing info. Within an hour they had my desired amount of points ( 60 points 2020 and 2021). I had to move on it as the availability in my UY was dwindling. It is no surprise one month out there are no October UY points.

And prior to what has occurred it was pretty easy to get what you wanted for UY, even when they say “I have to get approval for it”.

But.as shared, they have used a lot do points for owners and in order to give them to them, they had to be valid for the extension.

For example, many international owners have been given extended points through next May so those fall UYs would be the best ones for that.

Id just let the guide know to contact you if something happens and they can get you what you want.

Can't DVC change the UY of all points they take back through ROFR and foreclosures? If they can I don't understand why they would never have a UY available, it just doesn't make sense.

Yes, they can do that. But they still have to have the points in the other UY to make it work,

For example, say someone wants an Oct UY but all they have in stock is Feb, March, April and June. Those UYs are already in their 2021 UY.

Since October is still in it’s 2020 UY, they can not change any of those because they no longer have 2020 points with them.

Now, if someone wants a June UY and they have Oct, then it’s possible to change because Oct would still have its 2021 UY points available.

I'm not buying that they don't have Oct UY "in stock." I bet they will magically have Oct UY in stock on Oct 1st.

What they mean is they don’t have it in stock with 2020 UY points…and that’s what they need in order to sell it.

They have given owners a lot of points because of the closures and those points would have had to be 2020 points so it’s possible.

Once we hit October 1st, then they only need 2021 points which I am sure they have.

That was my initial thought too, especially since they said they would have to talk to management about it, but it seems that that's the case given the situations described above.

Just curious if you were looking to add on points like BWV Dreamin was able to do, or if you are purchasing a brand new membership. Not to say that it has anything to do with it but that maybe why they are steering you towards February and April if you are purchasing for the first time.

I just purchased today at AKL, December use year was no problem. Getting the 2020 points was a big selling point for us too. Good luck!

We bought Sept UY in July at Riviera. Our guide had to talk to management, but it wasn’t an issue.

However, I spoke to a different guide in the process and he would not sell us the Sept UY.

If you want October UY at Riviera you have 2 options: 1) speak to another guide or 2) wait until October and forgo 2020 points.

Since it is Riviera, still in active sales, and not nearly sold out, why would they not have more points with October UY?

Because the current October points (use year 2020) that DVD has in the declared inventory have already been used and there aren't enough left to sell October use years until the 2021 use year begins.

Points can't be sold unless they are declared into the condominium, and a sale always includes current use year points. The October 2020 points expire on 9/30/2021 - that's less than a month away. Rather than risk those points expiring with no value, the rooms they represent were rented for cash or "donated" to DVC to help alleviate the "glut" caused by extending the points some members lost due to the COVID closures. DVD cannot sell what they do not have.

DVD likely has plenty of points still available for sale in the declared inventory - they just don't have current use year points in the declared inventory for the use years about to turn over. It may be disappointing to those who want to buy those use years right now, but if DVD has a chance to rent the points it still owns before they expire, they will do it. They are not going to hold them hoping a buyer will materialize. If a particular use year is important, one needs to buy early in the use year to assure getting current use year points.

New member. Spoke to another guide after seeing the above post about buying a Dec UY direct (first guide said no Oct/Dec UY were being sold at ANY resort), and they were also trying to sell an April UY.

The second guide also had to talk to management about an Oct UY, which they denied and were offering April or September. For me, if I'm paying the premium of going direct I'd like to be able to choose my own UY and getting current UY points. But this whole process of going back to management to ask permission and not being clear about why I can't be sold that UY really rubs me the wrong way. If they don't have the UY to sell because they don't have those points to sell then just tell me straight up (which I'm starting to believe less and less after hearing some of the posts above), don't make it a show of getting approval and trying to push me towards something I don't want. I'll settle for resale at other resorts for now and probably just add a small direct or resale contract Riviera in the future.

Yea I would first find a resale contract for the Use Year that you want, (October) as you can not change the use year of the contract you buy.

Of course by that time the contract passes through ROFR and points are loaded you will be in the October 2021 allocation of points but at least you will have the use year that you wish for not the one they are pushing you to.

After you are established an have a member number you should then be able to purchase a direct add-on for the same use year at the resort you wish for provided of course they have points available.
