I just got the email that there will soon be a tool on dvcmember for trading into RCI. I have never considered it because we love going to Disney so much, but perhaps I can be swayed.

Is it a good trade? Would you consider it a trade up or down in terms of accommodations (cleanliness/amenities) most of the time? What about in terms of how much time you get (Will enough points for 7 days get you 7 days at an RCI resort?)?

I have done two RCI exchanges, Ft Myers and Ft Lauderdale.
Ft Myers I considered a let down - not worth the exchange.
Ft Lauderdale I would do again - happended to go during the week of the annual military show. While at the pool on the 5th floor of the resort, was looking down at a flying SR-71.

Traded to the Playa Grande in Cabo for a week in 2010. If totally do it again. If you search Playa Grande, my old review should show up. Yes, we got a full week, one bedroom, and the resort was very nice.

In general trading DVC is almost always a downgrade. However, there are exceptions and these that also fit your life choices may be worth considering. You really need to plan well in advance, like a full year minimum for most options, 10 months min for RCI points resorts.

We were there at the same time as you in a resort as nice or nicer for a total cost of $600-700 for the 2 weeks. I would not consider this a good value as a trade. MX is notoriously easy to trade into and has gotten even easier the last couple of years.

We traded into the Quarter House in New Orleans last year. Requested it about 3 months out and wait listed and it came through about a month before. It was a points resort that we stayed at Saturday to Wednesday.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom and the only disappointment was that there wasn't a washer dryer in the unit. The unit was in the smaller side but it was in a historic building only blocks from bourbon street, Jackson square etc.

I think it is all relative on whether using your points is worth it. I bought my DVC so that I could take a vacation every year without having to worry about budgeting for accommodations. So for me it is worth it to be able to just pick up the phone and make a call.

Value is in the eye of the beholder. At that time DVC was our entire budget. I've read you post this before and honestly I'm really not sure what the point is. Good value, bad value, we took the trip and had an a amazing time.

Everyone can decide for themselves but value generally has a financial component. Your trade would have been either 160 or 270 pts for a 1 or 2 BR per week. Where I stayed would have 1500 points for the 2 weeks. I value my points more than that. The reason for my post was to provide the information and comparison, ESP sine this is a direct and real world example.
