Would anyone be willing to share the point costs for the Disney Alaska Cruises in August 2011? (I'm not a DVC member - yet - so don't have access to the membersite.)

I would be interested in knowing the costs for adults in Cat 7 and Cat 11 rooms.

(I realize with the current DVC/DCL booking issues, that actually getting an Alaska cruise on points in 2011 is not likely to happen.)

A category 7 ranges from 273 to 346 points per person based on two adults in the stateroom.

A category 11 ranges from 149 to 206 again per person based on two adults in the stateroom.

Pricing depended upon date of cruise. Which at this time there is zero availability for DVC members booking on points or points & cash.

Thanks Carol Ann ... I've read your thread about the policy changes regarding DCL/DVC - it's frustrating to be sure. I'm glad things worked out for you in the end.

This new development MAY be what delays my purchase into DVC. Down the road, I fully intend to use the vast majority of my points for DVC resort stays, but I had planned on using the 2010 (and possibly 2011) points on DCL - we already have a DCL Alaska Cruise booked and so weren't planning on a WDW trip in 2011 so it seemed like a good alternate use of points. (I know people will say I could rent my points to pay for DCL ... but, call me selfish, I want to keep my first set of DVC points to myself.) Oh well, if I can snag good airfare to Vancouver and good airfare to Orlando in October 2011, we just might be able to do 2 trips in 2011 ... time will tell. If not, maybe I will hold off on purchasing until we're in 2011 UY.

Thanks so much for this - I had done a Google search before posting and wasn't able to find anything.

I don't quite understand your logic. Whether you use your points directly for the cruise or rent the points and use the cash for the cruise (keeping the extra cash to use for excursions, etc.), you ARE using the DVC points for yourself. You're just using them more efficiently if you rent them and pay cash for the cruise than you would be if you used them for the cruise directly.

For comparison purposes, my DH and I are booked on the August 16 Alaska cruise. It would have been 684 points and I am paying only $4,457.12. Using $10 per point, I'm saving about $2,227 by paying cash instead of using our points. That savings will pay for a few helicopter rides, plane trips, etc. in Alaska.

It's not really logical - I'll admit that! :) The "businesswoman" in me totally agrees that renting the points would be a better use than a cruise.

A big part of me doesn't want to get involved in the whole points rental game. At this point in time, I don't want to deal with the hassle. (And sure, I could go through Dave's company, but still ... the selfish part of me really doesn't want my first dealings with MS to be to plan someone else's vacation.

to "DISNEYMATH" - What is Dave's Company - can you turn over the job of renting points?? That would be a big help to me as I also don't want to get involved in renting points to someone I don't know.......Thanks for the in:hippie:formation

Go to the rent/trade board and click on the ad at the top of the page for David's rentals. I haven't used him but my understanding is that he finds the people to rent from you and then you make the reservations for them. I believe he acts as the middleman for the $ changing hands, too.

You could find another member that wants to buy your points and do an easy transfer. It wouldn't be planning someone else's vacation, it would be saving a bunch of money on your own. The cash price is well worth the hassle and you could put down a deposit for your next cruise while on board with the money you save. That's my stategy!
