Only a Cub fan would think a team that is 20 games over 500 and still in the playoff pic (when all but 3 teams in the NL are...one of which is...anybody?) is choking it up. It's hard for any team to repeat, which is why no team has done it in the 2000's. They're still playing competitive ball and will again next year. These games in Aug. mean something on South Side of Chicago. North Side...not so much. Other than that ever important attendance record. Go Trib bottom line!!!
The Cubs are just three starters, maybe a third baseman (since their GM signed a contract where the guy can hold them hostage), and a few outfielders away from being competitive in the NL in 2007 where they too can have a shot at being swept from whatever AL team wins the pennant.
Hmmmm - having not won a World Series since 1908? The team which has gone the longest withOUT a World Series win? = _____________ - What would that be? Hmmmm??
Why is it, exactly, that Sox fans can't just enjoy their championship without having to compare themselves to the Cubs? Congrats to the Sox fans on the championship, though. I think I've actually watched more Sox games than Cubs games this year, because it's actually good baseball.
Long-suffering Cubs fan here. The Cubs are going nowhere until they get a clue about what it takes to win a baseball game. Jim Hendry was on WSCR last week, and derided a number of emailing/calling fans for their "Moneyball" attitude. Well, jeez, Jim, you're almost last in the league in OBP, you're almost last in runs scored, and you're almost last in wins. Ya think there might be something tying those things together?
