Cruising with points?

We are purchasing a SSR resale with lots of banked points. We would like to cruise summer or fall 2006. How far out are we allowed to book with points and how difficult is it to get the cruise you want? Help us plan!

you can only use the banked points in the use year in which they are banked. an example would be: my use year is from august 1st-july 31st, any points that i banked prior to july 31, 2005 would have to be used before july 31, 2006. so the first thing to find out is what period of time the points are banked for. you also have to remember that there is a cut-off date in your use year, after which you can only bank a portion of your points -50% to the next year, the remainder of the points you must use or lose in the current use year.

you can book a cruise as soon as the points are published to dvc members. once you become owner of the membership you can call member services and make a reservation. check out the dvc boards-they can offer great assistance.

We have cruised with points three times and have never had any difficulty getting a category 9 room. You can book the cruise on points 11 months in advance.

The only difficulty we had this last time was the dinner time. We requested early seating but that was filled up. We were on a waiting list for early seating which did come through a few months later.

Can you clarify--you can't use borrowed points for a cruise?

We just got back from a cruise using both banked and borrowed points. The points must be good for the date you are cruising. If your banked points expire June 1st then you must cruise by June 1st. You can always borrow from the next use year to cruise in your current use year.
