We are thinking about a cruise next year for the first time and would love to bring my parents with us , but my dad hates water. Boats he doesn;t mind but would never be caught dead in a swim suit or a swimming pool. Would he still enjoy the cruise ?! I understand Castaway Cay might be a problem but he could always stay on the boat or rent a bike there right ? What is there on the boats he could do not water related ? When I think of a cruise I think of lounging by a pool !!

I just returned from the 14 day cruise and the only time I wore a swim suit was the 30 minutes that I spent in the ear of the Mickey pool with our 2 YO son.

In fact, this was our third cruise, and I haven't yet actually gotten in any of the pools on the ship.

For this cruise, we did the bike rental on CC, and really enjoyed it.

My dad hates swimming, and doesn't even own a pair of swim trunks. He LOVES to cruise, expecially Disney. There are so many things other than swimming and laying by the pool. He loves deck 4 where you can sit in these really comfy chairs and relax. He loves going to the theater and watching a movie or a show.

On CC he walked out with us, and found a chair in the shade where he watched people. There are also trivia contests, bingo, etc. Check out dcltribute which has links to the navigators which show activities onboard.

Plenty to do beside the pool!

On port days of course are the ports. You are usually very close to a shopping area and some people just get off and shop. There are a wide variety of excursions - some involve water - some more a tour of the island.

On sea days there are a number of activities. Does your Dad like to golf? If so he might enjoy the chip-it golf game they hold in the atrium. Movies? They are usually playing every day. Adult entertainment series - everything from a tour of the ship, to dessert making, a tour of the galley, wine tasting, beer tasting, etc. etc. Maybe he just likes peace and quiet - then tell him to get a good book and head on down to deck 4. The padded lounge chairs there are great for reading (and napping)!

I'm a 36 year old (transplanted from The Bronx) Long Islander who is always either at the beach or on the boat when we're not working during the summer. The Only time I went into any water was at Castaway Cay to snorkel, otherwise I did not even stick a toe into any of the pools, even though I wanted to! I just didn't feel like swimming when there was so much else to do. I can swim at home, anyway.

He'll have a great time, as will you!

In our 8 cruises, I have never once set foot in any of the family pools (ugh) as I think they are extraordinarily filthy....not that DCL neglects them, it's just the number of little ones vs the size of the pools.

As for CC, there is plenty to do w/o going in the water....bringing a good book and reading under a shady umbrella, as well as renting a bike are 2 excellent and relaxing ways to spend the time there....

of pools - all my life. I'm 51 and have never used the pools on
the ships, BUT this is about my 20th cruise of my life. I LOVE
cruising. Thank goodness my children LOVE swimming - thank
goodness my husband always took them in the pools - I couldn't
even watch when they went in the pools, BUT give me a big
cruise ship, to stare out in the ocean, and I'm at peace - I LOVE
crusing.....next cruise, Disney Magic, 7/30/05.

We never found time to swim on board. Did snorkel at Castaway Cay though.
And we had kids with us, age 12 and 16. They never found time to swim on board either.

My 80 something Mom and Aunt took the glass bottom boat ride at CC then rode the tram to the adult beach area for lunch and people watching and enjoyed it. Neither brought swim suits and didn't feel the least bit left out.

DH wore his swimsuit on CC but didn't get wet. He spent the day in a lounger under an umbrella at Serenity Bay either reading or people watching while I drifted past on a float. I suspect he also took a nap since his ambition on the cruise was to rest and relax like the guy on the DCL commercial.
