Cruise ship catches on fire .............

Not to make this serious issue sound not so serious...

But it was a gambling ship--the little itty bitty boats--to call it a cruise ship--I envision mega-liner at the mention of cruise ship.

This was totally different from the Carnival Ecstasy fire a few years back IMO.

This is more of your worst nightmare of a 3-hour tour gone awry.

I feel sorry for the people onboard, but I'm not too surprised.

My parents went on the one that goes out of Port Canaveral exactly once. They also sail on the Sterling. They said the Sun Cruise was the worst experience they have ever had on a ship. They would never go on it again. The ship was dirty, the food offered poor, and the sailing itself was very rough. The latter I would attribute to tha small size of the ship involved and the fact they have to sail out to international waters to gamble.

Thanks jerinknox for the Ecstasy Fire pics--hadn't realized that was less than a month after my honeymoon on the Destiny. Wow that's a long time ago!

If you think that looks scary.....my family and I were on the Magic when it caught fire! Now that was a nightmare!

We too were on the Magic in March/02 when it caught fire. Thought I ws "ovr" it (as in I really never thought about it again after a weekor so until we went back on same cruise same ship this march/04. First night on board-nightmare re fire/abandonning ship. After that never thought about it again.

Guess the mind works in mysterious ways.

After our March '02 "DCL Fire Cruise", I look at the mandatory safety drill in a whole new way! No complaints here!

Was there an evacuation? Please describe? I know the aft stack burnt. Cause?

Also, I just read on Cruisecritic re: Carnival about a stateroom fire because of a candle that "exploded" that was smuggled on-board by a passender to create that special mood I guess. The got a mood alright. And to think all other lines allow smoking in staterooms - pure stupidity. No wonder DCL says no smoking, irorns, etc. in staterooms.

The cause was a malfunction in the shipboard incinerator.

As far as evacuation, everyone was called to the lifeboat stations, they were exactly 1 step from actually leaving the ship, all this in the wee hours of the morning.

During the 4 a.m. hour we were awakened by Cruise Director Jackie over the P.A. system telling us there was a fire in the aft funnel . Over the next 30 minutes or so Capt. Hans, and Jackie kept us updated. However, in the background during their addresses you could hear alarms going off. Finally, Capt. Hans told us that since the aft funnel extends from the bottom of the ship to the top, alarms were going off on all decks. So as a "precautionary measure" everyone was asked to wear warm clothing, put on their life vest, and report to their muster station. (Later that day, the CM's said that it went smoother than most Saturday safety drills!) While standing in the darkness on deck 4 it was interesting to watch several other ships (cruise ships, etc) heading toward us. The Magic at that point was no longer moving. Capt. Hans, and Jackie kept us updated throughout the incident. Finally, after about 90 mins (someone correct me if I'm wrong) we were told the fire was out, and we could return to our rooms. For the final two days of our cruise, the Mickey pool area was closed, along with Studio Sea (which had a heavy smoke odor). I'm not sure if the Buena Vista Theatre was also closed. For our trouble DCL gave everyone $100/stateroom credit. For us that came to $33.33/person. A year later, the DCL safety officer told me there was no "official" cause of the fire. MarkRG, I have no doubt you are correct.
