cruise newby with question

Hi folks, longtime dvc member, first time cruiser paying cash. We have booked 4 category 11 rooms for 8 people,(2 families of 4) When we booked, we got no room #'s, instead "guaranteed" rooms which says we'll either get rooms in our category or be upgraded. Anyone have any experiences booking like this, and did anyone get upgrades? Thanks, totally clueless here.

If you are GTY it means no Cat. 11 are available right now. Unless someone cancels, you will likely be upgraded. Keep in mind that this means possibly being upgraded to a lower deck such as deck 2 for an outside cabin. Of course, you <I>might</I> get lucky and end up with Cat. 5, 6 or 7 verandah room on a higher deck.

The possible problem is that even though you are booked as a group, since you have 4 rooms booked, some may end up with a higher category than others, and you could even end up on different decks.

You did the right thing booking GTY if you don't care which specific room you want. Since you are from Ormond Beach (Florida residents) I think helps your chances of an upgrade if your are cruising during Florida Residents discount time.

We learned about doing this from these boards and booked a June 7 Western (the last week into spring the Florida residents was offered) in January. We booked GTY status for a CAT 8. When the 60 day payment date came in April, we called DCL and they upgraded us to a CAT 6 (veranda - 6564 - great location) and discounted our cruise $1000 (credited back to our credit card).

Thats how were planning to book from now on. I hope DCL does the same for you!

I've met such wonderful people from this forum - one from my very own neighborhood that I never knew, one New Yorker transplanted to Indiana (just like me!) and friends from all over the US and Hawaii! Even cast members from other countries have become like "family" to us!

It's an incredible experience and you will begin to enjoy it more and more as time goes on!
