They strongly suggest and want men in pants (not jeans) but will not turn away shorts from what I have heard. I personally in five previous cruises have never seen any men or women in shorts in MDR. Just a suggestion - bring one or two pair of pants and wear only during dinner, then take off; should stay clean enough for the entire cruise.

This is incorrect. Jean are perfectly acceptable and allowed to be worn at dinner (I would not on formal night). At one point in time they were not but DCL changed that and they are now allowed (for several years now). Jeans are not allowed at Palo/Remy. Obviously ripped, torn or dirty jeans would be inappropriate. In 28 DCL cruise I have seen just about everything in the dining rooms.

They will not turn you away from any of the main dining rooms if you are in shorts. But they will from Palo/Remo. Basically they do not want you looking like a slob or like you just rolled out of bed. As long as you look presentable you will be fine.

Here is the dress code suggestion from the DCL site...

QuestionWhat should I wear to dinner?Answer
Dining Dress requirements vary by venue or theme night on your cruise. In general, most meals are "Cruise Casual"no shorts, swimwear or tank tops. Most cruises also have special theme nights with additional attire requirements. Here's a breakdown of these events by cruise itinerary.

On 3-night cruises:
"One cruise casual nightno shorts, swimwear or tank tops
"One pirate or tropical night (deck party)
"One "dress-up night"jacket for men, dress or pantsuit for women

On 4-night cruises:
"First night: cruise casualno shorts, swimwear or tank tops
"One pirate or tropical night (deck party)
"One "dress-up night"jacket for men, dress or pantsuit for women
"Final night: cruise casualno shorts, swimwear or tank tops

On 7-night cruises:
"First night: cruise casualno shorts, swimwear or tank tops
"Three additional "cruise casual" nightsno shorts, swimwear or tank tops
"One pirate or tropical night (deck party)
"One formal and one semi-formal nightformal wear for men: tuxedo or suit; for women: gown or dress; semi-formal wear for men: suit/jacket; for women: dress or pantsuit.

Dress code at Palo on all cruises:
"Men: dress pants and shirt or jacket
"Women: dress or pantsuit
"Please no jeans, shorts, capri pants, flip-flops or tennis shoes

Dress code at Remy on all cruises:
"A tuxedo or jacket (sports or suit jacket) is required with dress pants for men. Ties are optional.
"A cocktail dress, pant suit or skirt/blouse is required for women.
"Please no jeans, shorts, capri pants, flip-flops or tennis shoes.

On my past 2 cruises (Dream 2011 and Fantasy 2012) I was surprised by how many people wore shorts in the dining rooms. Most of them were men and kids though.
I have heard they won't seat you wearing a bathing suit, but anything else goes in the main dining rooms.

Servers have indicated their preference is that we are there on time and they don't care what we wear;)

What I do for my family is make sure they all have long dark pants for the dining rooms. The teens prefer their jeans and so I let them bring only those that are in good condition (along with a pair of dressier slacks). My family doesn't mind dressing up for dinner, but it is not worth a fight in my opinion as you will see plenty of variety in dress:thumbsup2

Some Tide stain stick helps as well as changing after dinner to make sure the clothes can be re-worn. We will change out the tops from night to night.

I've only been on 7 night cruises so far and I've read mixed info- will we have a formal night on our 3 night Dream cruise?

TIA!

I'm also a first time cruiser and was wondering about the "dress up" night attire. Is a maxi dress ok or is a cocktail style dress more appropriate?

The 3 & 4 night cruises don't have formal night. There is a Dress Up Optional night. You can dress up if you want to.

Thanks!

My boys are growing so fast, I hate to buy a suit for just one night!

Ok - so working out my packing list for our March cruise and I have a couple of questions...

We're at Palo for brunch - are capris ok for ladies? Jacket a must for the guys? We'll be dressed a bit more than cruise casual but I wondered is the same requirements were there for brunch as for dinner
Also - website says "dress-up" night. I don't remember this from our 3 night cruise. Are we fine in our "dressier" cruise wear or is it "jackets and dresses required" here too? Thanks!!
I'm not really a dress girl - much prefer linen slacks so any packing suggestions are welcome!

I am going to merge all the dress code threads just from today so the info is all in one thread.

Brunch at Palo is more casual and no jacket needed for brunch and I have always worn capris to Palo brunch.

We are headed out for the 4 day Dream 2 weeks from today and I am packing light this time.

Optional dress up nights are just that...optional. Pretty much anything goes. No jacket or dress required.

Thank you! I tried a search and it only gave me old threads

I am going to make some of the people mad but on Disney you can dress any way you want and they will not turn you away. On our last cruise half the table forgot it was formal night and showed up in day dresses, pants and t-shirts and did not realize anything was wrong until part way though dinner they noticed me and my son were in our suits.

The adults in our party can manage long pants on our cruise, but how about my 3 and 6 year old DS? Would nice shorts and polo shirts work?

The DCL suggested "dress code" says "no shorts, tank tops, or bathing suits for dinner". There is no age specified as to who this applies to.

While above is true you will see many kids in shorts and you should not stress over the dress code. DCL is much more relaxed and they will not turn anyone away from the dining rooms if they are wearing shorts.

Just trying to put it all in perspective.

I'm packing some "nice" shorts for my 11 year old (not worth the fight) but he will also be wearing a polo. My 15 year old will be in nice slacks with a polo.

Can they wear flipflops? Nice sandals?
