I put a load of clothing in, set it to the normal cycle. Went to check on it and it was making a humming noise and had a burning plastic smell. I turned it off, moved it to a different cycle and now it is running. I NEED to get it through this load (it is all of my pants). CRUD. We went back and forth about getting a new washer/dryer on the Black Friday sales and didn't. CRUD, CRUD, CRUD!!!!

Appliances seem to fail at the worst possible time. My washer also failed at the beginning of a weekend when I had about 20 loads to do. My refrigerator failed right after I went shopping, and my oven failed on Christmas Day halfway through the cooking of my prime rib.

I really should be more proactive about getting stuff before it dies because then I'm stuck having to buy something under "duress" and having to get whatever can be delivered the soonest rather than what I really want.

When we replaced our 8 year old washing machine a couple of years ago, we found a whole mass of black gook on the floor underneath it. Seems that some of the hoses had simply degraded, flaked away to black dust that then re-coalesced on the floor. We were probably no more than weeks away from a major flood. We should never have delayed the replacement so long.

Our washer bit the dust a couple months ago. Got a new High Efficiency front loader... OMG! LOVE IT!!!

IMHO, stop using it as soon as possible and call someone in. Mine was doing the same thing but I let it go and the whole motor needed to be replaced instead of one single part. It would have been much less expensive if I had the repair done where you are at right now but I didn't realize it was a big deal:headache:

I just had to have the pump in my washer replaced. I also had a weird humming noise and a burning plastic smell. The pump cost something like $180:headache: and the labor was $120. A few less things for Xmas this year.

Lowe's has all their appliances on sale.

Just bought a new washer this past Monday. Only $449 on sale. Took it home right that minute. (Saving the delivery fee)

We had the same thing happen a few months ago. It was the weekend and I decided to try to get just a few more loads out of it. The repairman said that we burnt off a plastic part that was attached to the motor and the only way to fix it was to replace the entire motor. He told me that a lot of the major manufacturers now use plastic parts that break in their washers and not to waste my money buying an expensive washer because it probably wouldn't be worth it.

Ours just died. I really can't complain, it is 15 years old . It was from our first set as a newlywed couple.

We were out looking yesterday, and are going back today to purchase one. The thing is the delivery is only available from the 27th. We are going to try to use DFIL's truck to get it home. I just can not wait until next week, and the thought of hauling my laundry to my mother's :scared1:

What is it about the holidays that makes appliances act up?:confused3

I just noticed last night that the ice-maker on my refrig/freezer is not working. Like I have the time right now to wait for a repairman. I guess I'll go buy a bag of ice and call them next week!

TC:cool1:

My washer stopped spinning the clothes a while back so I have to wring them out before putting them in the dryer. I've checked with a couple people who said it's really not worth it to fix and to just but a new one. I'd like to get a new washer but it's not in the budget for now.

Yes, that is a real Pain in the....
Ours leaks tons of water, and if I do anther load, it will just rot the darn floor  So it is unplugged, and reach to be chucked.

I knew both my washer and dryer were living on borrowed time and trying to just get through Christmas but nope! So had to buy both ($1,000 thank you very much:scared1: not even a fancy set or anything) having delivery next week after Christmas weekend.

Here is a kicker... I also need a dishwasher but found out our counter tops are too low to accomodate a new one. Our house is 35 years old and our dishwasher was put in 15 years ago when we bought the house. Apparently they make them bigger now. We had a contractor here to look at our options to raise the counter tops... grrr....

We did a repair to the machine this past summer so it isn't worth fixing again-it is 15 years old. I don't even have the heart to tell DH about it

Purchased ours. Does not deliver until the 28th :guilty:

Oh well, glad school is out, and no uniforms to wash, lol.

I think I will show up with more than dessert to my mother's house on Xmas. Merry Xmas Ma, let me throw a few loads on :rotfl2:

Hmm... 'Tis the Season, I suppose.

Put a load in ours last night on the normal/regular cycle, came upstairs and about a half hour later heard, THUD THUD THUD... I was afraid to go back downstairs to check on it for fear of being attacked!

I smelled the burning, too.

I guess it's the transmission, because mine also works on delicate cycle. ;)

Of course, at Christmas!

We just replaced our 22 yr old washer last month! We bought a Whirlpool from Lowe's. Sears had the exact same model for less. Lowe's beat Sear's price by 10%. Lowe's also has free delivery/removal.
